EVGA step-up gave me a 8800GT 512MB for my 8800GTS 640MB and I installed it a couple of days ago. Twice today, after being powered on for several minutes, the monitor suddenly went all one solid color (1st time was purple - 2nd time was gray) and the computer stopped responding.

Anyone else experience anything like this? Could it be a bum card? I guess I call EVGA again tomorrow.

Have you overclocked the current card?

Neither card was overclocked. It's right out of the box.

I would talk to EVGA about an RMA then. I asked about the overclock because that has happened with a bad overclock. If it happens on stock, I suspect a DOA card.

How did you go about uninstalling/re-installing your drivers?

Definitely possible DOA card but also like jason is saying, make sure you fully uninstalled 8800GTS drivers prior to installing the 8800GT. Go into safe mode (F8) uninstall the graphics driver and use a driver cleaner. Then boot into main OS normally and install the new drivers.

I was having all kinds of crazy issues when I went from 8800GTS 320 to GT's

Thanks. I'll give that a shot. I just uninstalled the drivers through the device manager & installed the new drivers. Didn't go into safe mode. I'll try that when I get home.

Why not upgrade to the GTS 512mb? You probably payed more for the 640 gts than the 512 gts.

Lol. Way to rub salt in the wounds.

I called several times and BEGGED EVGA to let me step up to the new GTS instead, but my step-up deadline was the 5th and the new GTS wasn't released until the 11th. They refused to allow me to get the GTS - even though it was a better price match to my current card (which I paid $390 for).

Odd, isn't EVGA usually a little forgiving if your step-up date ends within days of a new card's launch?
