Are both pcs using DHCP ( Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)?

Does the router have DHCP Server ENABLED? And set for at least 2 pcs using dhcp?

Any other noted hardware problems?

NOTE: I don't know WinXP at all.

Damn i didn't know what i was missing home networks are sweet. to make it work you have to disable the firewall that xp has and then you can see the shared files on the other computers well got to get back to playing Quake III

go into my network
click view network connections
right click on your connection
click properties
click advanced on the top it says internet protection firewall uncheck the box

this makes the 98 pc see the xp and shre files without a problem
