I bought a WD 40 gig hard drive from these fine folks at Best Buy. Or what I thought was a WD 40 gig. I opened it up and fouind that it was actually a Quantum Fireball 16 gig HD someone had in their Comcrap system. What's a guy supposed to do??? Some idiot bought that WD drive, threw it in their computer, and put their old piece of trash in the packaging and returned it!!! And what's worse is BB did not mark it as opened packaging, they re-shrink wrapped it and put it on the shelves. I have a war to fight tomorrow... I don't think they'll take it back, they'll think I was the one with the Quantum Fireball HD and did this. DON'T EVER BUY FROM BEST BUY!!! I'll keep you guys posted as to what happened.

If BB receives a product back that has factory seal intact *or so they think* they will not open it, they will simply refund the money and put the product back out on the shelf thinking it is all in good order. I know this personally because when I worked as a PC Tech there we had a few products that didn't quite match up, IE Video Cards not being the same model as the box and etc. If a customer does something like re-shrink wrap there really is no way to dispute it, I would take it back immediately and be speaking to the manager, tell them exactly what happened. Usually not all the time but usually they will exchange it for you and write the loss off. Just my suggestion of what you should try and do, being an honest customer who has been swindled I hope they sincerely do their best to make you happy.

Good Luck

K, thanks for the help. My experiences with Best Buy's returns before have not always been so great. The costumer may have reshrinked it... they didn't seal the anti-static bad though, it was opened. Didn't have the WD Data Lifeguard disk either (big loss...). I just got upset because I'm working on a RAID setup... really steams me that someone does this. To be so cheap as to re-shrink a package just to get your $120 back. I returned some RAM to them not too long ago that kept blue-screening my computer for some reason, they simply stated there was nothing wrong with the RAM without even trying it, that's why I really get nervous about this. I'm not looking forward to returning anything tomorrow... much less something that's most likely going to be disputed like this. Ergh...

As long as you contact them immediately, I would think there will be no problem. I'm sure they deal with this stuff a lot during the holidays..:)

yeah I would be calm and if it doesn't work go to another best buy. I will say your chances at the first one are probably 95% sure it will work if you need to go to 4 stores it is closer to 100%. the lines will be murder today so that is when I would do it cuz they aren't going to want to take a long time and will end up giving it to you.

My experience is that they unwrap the product and check it out. I had bought a NIC card cuz I thought one of them was fried on my network. got it working and returned the unopened one to best buy. the customer service lady proceeded to rip open the platic and unseal the box, and antistatic and brought it back to a tech to look at. I was a bit taken back and asked if people actually shrinkwrap and return and she said that she has seen some very good jobs of it and has caught a few also. Some peoples kids!

Here's a few suggestions.

1) Bring a camcorder or at least a tape recorder with you. If they deny your right to return and start implying that you are the one making the switch tell them you have them on tape stating that you are the thief and that you'll sue for slander.

2) If they try to deny your right to return tell them you'll take all of your clothes off and stand on the retun desk screaming your lungs out, if they're smart they'll settle right then and there. If not they'll grab you (assault, on their store security cameras) or they'll play it cautious and close the store so the cops can deal with you and they'll lose lots of dough (boxing day $$$).

3) Return it to as many stores as you can until you find one that will accept it. If you go for this then don't take the two suggestions above, if you stand out to the first store they may call other stores in your area and wan them about you.

4) Sue them into an early grave, no one likes big corporations, right bill gates????

Yes, yes I am. VERY serious. If they effed me that badly I'd consider it my duty to take it to them. And take it I would.

I think the whole situation s$cks, jazztrumpet216 I feel for you bro and I can tell you that the manager here in Sarasota Fl. at the Best Buy is a royal bonehead and the customer is never right when your dealing with him, every year he gets alot fatter so you know the company pays him well to just say no.

I hope the manager at your local BestBuy is a Mensch and perhaps call him tomorrow on the phone and explain the situation that way nobody is shell shocked at the customer service center.

Hope it works out for you.

ps saw several industrial sealers on Ebay for 30-300 dollars and they readily available and not expensive

If you were smart you would call the Police and have them lift prints from the con artist that started this mess for you, theres a good chance he has a record and if so they can investigate this and the manager may ofter to refund your money as he sees that you reported it to the police

Yes, yes, yes!!!! That is a great idea. I'd go with that option before the naked thing.

I feel your pain. Last year I bought a All in wonder 128 Pro. Took it to the local shop to have it installed. It was D.O.A., but I took it back and they gave me my money. My mother bought a computer there an E-Machine can't remember which. I hooked it up for her and the Mic output didn't work. I said lets take it back cause they went for the four year warranty. Next day we went back and they hooked it up it still didn't work, they tried to say it did, but we were right there and know better. I got up in the guys grill and said look son I'm from Missouri and you going to have to show me. When all was said and done we got the money back.

Best Buy just opened a store up here. So far they've treated me allright. They took back a P.O.S. Winmodem that I bought to install in a machine I was putting together for a friend. Of course, I was buying a sound card instead.
I also bought a serial port to ps2 adapter that didn't work with my mouse. They
took it back no problem. I bought a USB mouse instead. I had one problem with
a rebate that they advertised, but wasn't in their computers database because of a crash. They told me to keep checking back so they could print out the rebate forms. I did, but I kept getting the same answer,"not yet, but soon".
They offered to give me half of the $20.00 rebate, but I wanted to get the full
amount. They finally got tired of seeing me, and gave me the full amount. It never did come up in their computer, even though it was plainly marked on the
tag on the shelf.

Happened to me the other day with a CD-ROM drive from them. It said 52x on the outside, took it out and it was a non-working 56x. It was obviously opened, but not marked that way...should have never got it when it looked opened. Went to CompUSA and got a different one.

We haven't heard from jazztrumpet216 on his update....

I did say call the police not turn yourself into the police right???

Lol, no, didn't turn myself in. Exchanged it today, there were no problems, surprisingly enough. There was a long enough line so I suppose they just wanted to get me out of there. It was tagged accordingly at which point they let me get into line. One manager eyed the hard drive suspiciously, at which point I told him that the drive in question was a Quantum Fireball hard drive out of a Compaq machine, and under no circumstances would I EVER run a Compaq. He then called another manager over, they mulled it over for a few seconds, and decided to let me exchange it for another 40 Gig. It's workin' fine in my machine right now. I was fully prepared to get up on the counter naked though....

Glat to hear it. But you could have jumped up on the counter (afterwards), ripped off your clothes and, swinging your shirt and pants in the air to get attention, yelled "Aren't these people great! They exchanged a bad hard drive without giving me any hassle! Aren't they just marvelous?!" You know, to thank them for being responsible.

my experience with best buy was i needed a new cd-rom so i went in picked one out, the nice friendly employee carried it up to the counter for me so i wouldn't steal it or something, i then charged this $40 cd-rom on my check card and left. Me being the stupid moron that i am did not look at the receipt and just left. When i got home and was getting rdy to install my new cd-rom my gf pulled out the reciept and asked me why i had bought a $90 dollar dvd player. I immediately took it back to BB and they pretty much told me that i was a liar and a thief, the girl at the register denied having seen me they told me that they had checked the security footage and couldn't tell what was being carried to the counter. They were very good at making me wait around though, and telling me to come back tommorrow for 3 days in a row.

Check out eoboard's first post in this thread. That's just plain dishonest, and I'd have no qualms about giving them Hades about it. Made a really big stink to the manager. They certainly deserve it.
Grrrrrrr.

I hate that freakin store! I preordered a digital camera for my girlfriend at christmas, which was supposedly out of stock. I go to the store, and find a couple haggling with a salesman in the digital camera department. They ended up getting the same camera that I ordered, new in the box, for $50 less than I paid. So I guess that the posted price is simply a ballpark for haggling with the salesman. What country is this? I feel sorry for suckers like myself who have bought items at the posted price. Needless to say, I didn't end up getting a camera there. This is just one of my many experiences contributing to my contempt for this retail giant. I always leave that store feeling ripped off in some way. I hope that one day I will make enough money to not have to shop there.

I went yesterday to get the $59 TDK VeloCD 24X that they were pricematching Circuit City on. I called the first store, and they said that they had them and that they were $59. I asked the guy to hold a few for me. When I got there not an hour later, they were $129. When I told them that I had just called and confirmed the price, they basically said, "Oh well."

I left and I called another store and asked them what their price was. They said $59, but they were out of them. I asked the girl (Wendy) if I could get a raincheck for 2 of them at $59, and she said that I could but I would have to come to the store. When I got there, the sign said $129 and when I talked to the manager and told him that I spoke to Wendy and she said that I could, he told me that she was "misinformed." So after discussing it with him and the store manager for a few minutes, they decided that they could give me a raincheck. When the guy printed it out, it was for $129!!! I asked him why in the hell I would want a raincheck for $129. He said that was what the system gave him when he put in the SKU. What a crock of crap.
