im building a pc this january and my cousin said this would be a good place to get information...so anyway i was thinking of getting an ati radeon 64mb ddr but a friend keeps trying to sway me to get a card w/ a geforce 2 GTS on it (preferably from ELSA or leadtek). I was hoping some of your responses could give me a definite idea of what i should get...thanx for your help

any response about the two cards can help
This is a messy topic among us PC freaks :p.
First, welcome to our forums.
I personally love my Radeon. I have owned and built machines with nvidia cards, and found them to be impressive gaming cards, but the visual quality to be noticeably poorer. NOT POOR, just not as good as the radeon.
If your friend needs pure gaming, get the best nvidia card you can afford. If it's for gaming and windows applications, like myself with a flatscreen, then get a radeon. If gaming is not an issue and they'll only need windows to look sharp, get a matrox.

I say go with the Gef2 GTS, anything from ATi thats below the Radeon 7500 is not worth it.

unless you really want to VIVO the 64mb DDR is not worth it....the 7500 is definately the best buy at around 115$ the Geforce2Tis are also good...at this point i dont recommend a GTS its a little out of date....

for price and all around performance i'd take the radeon 7500 over any other card. that's just mho. but i will agree, if you just want a gaming card go with the gforce. i like the all around performance from ati. unsurpassed 2d and the 7500 and 8500 are monster gaming cards as well....

straight out gaming I would get an 8500 it is equal to a Ti500 in performance, if he is the average gamer than I would go ATI 7500 for cost/performance, best TV out at 1024x768 and great 2D Video plus great dvd playback
Nvidia produces great cards I just prefer ATI for all round use

I've read on 3DSpotlight that the GeForce4 is supposed to be announced the second half of January. Key word announced. But as of now I'd have to say that the best card out right now is the ATi Radeon 8500. It's getting better with the newer drivers.
Here are the rumoured specs:
GeForce4 Ti1000 (High-End) - 128bit memory interface, 128 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 350Mhz, Clock frequency of 350Mhz DDR(700Mhz), AGP 8x
GeForce4 Ti500 (Mainstream) - 128bit memory interface, 128 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 300Mhz, Memory frequency of 300Mhz DDR(600Mhz), AGP 8x
GeForce4 MX Pro (Mass Market) - 128bit memory interface, 64 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 250Mhz, Memory frequency of 300Mhz DDR(600Mhz), AGP 8x
GeForce4 MX (Low-End) - 128bit memory interface, 64 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 250Mhz, Memory frequency of 275Mhz DDR(550Mhz), AGP 8x
I'm drooling already. Welcome to the forums.

Also, the GF4 lines have 64bit color support and the next gen of Radeon 8500 is called as "Radeon 8500 Maxx". This is what I heard.

does an AGP Pro slot comply with AGP 8x?

Yes, AGP Pro supports AGP 8x mode. I saw in the Intel specs that they need to implement a voltage divider in order to compensate.
