My current entertainment system is a hdtv, xbox360, digital cable box, computer, and dvd player. I also have a sony receiver that puts out 6.1 sound. The problem is I use a dvi to hdmi adaptor to hook my pc to my tv and use the audio on my pc because there is no sound out of the vidoe card of course and if I were to hook it up to my receiver, I would get no sound.

So is the following possible?

I want to create a htpc that will have hd-dvd and eventually blueray drives that will be hooked directly to my tv. This will also allow me to play movies I have saved on my back-up server. Is it possible to hook the xbox (hdmi or component), and digital cable box to my htpc so I don't have to switch between inputs anymore? I would just tell the htpc to do what ever I want.

If this is possible, would it be better to get a good sound card to handle the audio or get a new receiver? (The one I have is old anyways.) I was thinking a good sound card would be better because computers always handle new formats better than standalone devices.

Thank you.

Yes. You need two tuner cards or one with two inputs. Your sound card must have two inputs also.

There is no component or HDMI-capable input for the PC, however. The only choice will be via S-Video, coax (RF tuner), or composite. All of these will only be capable of standard definition resolutions and the downscaling will probably look worse than a standard DVD.
