View Full Version : Got a few hs + fan choices in mind.
I am in the process of searching for a very good heatsink along with a high performance fan with it. I'm still a little unsure as to what I should go with. My specs are in the sig. Right now, I'm looking towards the Thermalright SK6. I've also got the Alpha PAL6035, Globalwin CAK38, Swiftech 370, and the Coolermaster CB5-6G52 in mind. I've heard horror stories that the all copper hs have been noted to rip out sockets. Should there be any concerns here? I don't have to remove the hs once it's tacked on, whether I'm going to LAN parties to hauling the thing on my back.
Anyways, for the other part, I plan to strap one of those sucker Delta fans. The model I'm interested in is the FFB0612EHE. I'm sure this is the best it can get with basic aircooling, minus the irratating noise. I was wondering if there are comparable ones that are much quieter and push atleast 40+ CFM's?
Also, I know a possible way to decrease noise and keep or even increase the flow rate by using the 80 to 60 fan adaptor. That way, I can get a Delta still, push more air, yet 10 decibals quieter. How well do fan adaptors work, and are they worth it? At the expense of hearing, probably so. Which ones are worth buying?
I'd like to see what others of you think of these parts mentioned :)

go for the sk6, this can take a 80mm fan without an adaptor because the fan is held on with wire not screws, this means you can put on a moderaly quite fan that still blows 40CFm or get a delta that does 80CFM

Keep this in mind. Go to the Junk yard rip a radiator fan cut a hole in your case big enough to house it. Run duct work straight to your HS. have a 2 12 volt batteries hooked up in parallel so they keep eachother cahrged. Yeah that might work.
For real. I like the MCX370, but the SK6 is suppose to be better because of its copper design. However, the Swiftech has the helicoil pad design and is excellent. When running extreme burn ins I could touch my HS and it was cold using the MCX370. Its all a matter of choice, but whatever you use, don't forget the DYnaMAt for noise conrtoll.:D
I've read reviews, and many seem to like the SK6 very much. I'm just worried about the sheer weight of this copper block, that may rip my socket right off. I guess this is all pointless worry and should go ahead of it. I'd definitely go with an 80-60 fan adaptor, but I've heard mixed reviews with them. Will they decrease performance sustaintially? I'm looking at the 812VHE Delta so I think I shouldn't have any worries?
Also, I plan on lapping the heatsink. Any precautions with lapping copper? I was thinking of using an electric sander, but I think that's overkill.
Yikes. After OCing my Celly to 1.44, my case temps have risen to 31 on idle, and 35 in load. Room temps are in the low 20's. Would decreasing the case temps by around 6-10 degrees be possible? I hate to keep saying this, but, I've got nothing cooling the case down right now.

Hi Bonka,
I suggest you to go with a SK6 with Delta38Cfm, or better with a Delta50Cfm (60x60x35mm) but working @7v (tollerable), coz this kind of fans are really noisy and annoying @12v! or you can go with a Millenium Glaciator II (quiet).
About the Case cooling, well the best set possible is to have a temp of 1-2 degree C up to the ambient temp, how many fan holes do you have into your case?
P.S. forget to lap the HeatSink with the electric sander!
better to use a flat base, like a glass square with the sheets of sandpaper, grain 600, 1000 & 1500, no more!, fixed with adhesive tape, and at the end of the lapping process, clean the bottom of the HS with thermal paste.
Dynatron has a cooler that blows them all away - as a member I can not advertise but PM me and I will send you the info about it - basically weight of PAL and more effective than the swifty....
Would I require a shimmy for the SK6? The weight, I'm a little weary of. But that hs is on the top of the list. I was thinking of strapping on a fan adaptor, with the 812VHE delta on it (57cfms, 44.5db) which is much more tolerable.
I have the standard case fan opening at the rear of the tower. Looks like I can strap an 80mm at the front of the tower, inside the case. Otherwise, I'd have to be a little creative to find some good spots for fans.

Generally shims are used on AMD's cpu, and doesn't work very well on Intel chip, but I'm not experienced about, so if you are worryed about the weight (if I remember well the SK6 is around 400 grams with fan on top) it's a good idea to taste it.
About the case cooling, well, you can start using two 80mm fans rated for 40-50Cfm, one in the front/low for the intake, and the other for the exhaust in the up/back, and if not enough, you can improve the case airflow with two blow hole, one for a fan on the left case panel that sucks fresh air directly onto the PCI/AGP slots, and the other on the upper cover of case, on top, that blows out the hot air.
P.S. for more info about case mod take a look here (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?threadid=29083) ;)
In terms of case cooling, I do plan to get 2 high performance 80mm fans. That should be a breeze for installation. However, with my cheap case, I'd have a problem installing a blowhole at the top of the case, as it looks like very cramped quarters. With a little modification, I think I can squeeze in at least 2 more fans in there. My plans for blowholes will be cutting a few holes on the side panels; might even get a 120mm fan in there if I'm really hardcore.

You cannot install a 120mm fan for the exhaust in the up/back to compensate the intake?
Personally I'm using for my full tower Case 1x80mm fan (Sunon 42Cfm) in the fron/low + 2x92mm (Sunon 49Cfm) on the left panel for the intake, and for the exhaust 1x80mm (Sunon 42Cfm) in the up/back + 1x120mm (Sunon 90Cfm) + the Power Supply fan, and the case temp is always 1-2, max 3 degree C up to the ambient.

If there is no room in between the PS and the back of the CD-ROM, you could always cut out part of the top of the case so that it hole matches the diameter of the inside of the 120mm fan and bolt it the outside of the case. Make sure to put a grill for the fans in any case! Heck you might even put the fan half over the CD-ROM and half over the "gap" because the PS is already taking out a lot of the heat. Plus, I go with the Doors on the idea of putting a fan right on the side of the case so that it is blowing in cool air right on the AGP/PCI slots or right below the cooler. The config. like I described above (and as others have above) brought my CPU temps. down by 10degrees F!
