View Full Version : 1GB VRAM doesn't really matter, says Expreview

Folks over at Expreview have got some benchies with 3 GTs at 256MB, 512MB and 1GB VRAM. They found out that 512MB and 1GB VRAM are not really different. Not the case with 256MB and 512MB though.
[Review]8800GT, how much memory do you need? (http://en.expreview.com/?p=159)
Apparently the only game that can bring a 512MB to its knees is PT Boats. Yes, not even the almighty Crysis prevails in the test . Those high-profile games only show a tad benefit from the 1GB at 19x12 res with 4xAA. Interesting reading I reckon.

More video ram only comes into play at very high resolutions, 1920x1200 or higher. This has been known for quite a while.
LOL. Call of Duty 4 puts my weee 8600m GT damn near to 512mb.

Yeah, but it's quite surprising how well the 512MB card was doing at 19x12 in their tests.
P.S -- I can see how popular 1GB cards will be in this year :D.

Ahh so that Palit 8500GT with 1GB DDR2 isn't a waste of money after all!

As long as LCD prices keep coming down at the rate they are now, everyone will be playing above those resolutions soon.
I mean 4 years ago 1024x768 was pretty solid on an LCD.
Now 1600x1200 is around the normal range for an LCD.
A few years from now everyone will have 30" 1920x1200 monitors.
Basically people are argueing that putting that much memory on a GPU is stupid. Not at all, GPU memory has to keep up with the rapidly increasing LCD market. It would be foolish to not have video card options over 1GB in the near future.

Like I posted in the other thread about the guy asking about getting a 256 or 512 video card. One thing people overlook is the higher resolution textures. Other than that, it doesn't do a whole lot. Like the guy who asked if he should get the 256 since he doesn't game over something like 12x10. Won't do anything, but will make the game look a lot better. I would consider the higher resolution textures better than turning on AA in some games.

I did not read the article but read the OPs post.
"At 1900x1200 and 4AA 1GB makes almost no difference..."

i read the reviews and basically nothing at 1920 x 1200 with any AA had any diff between 512 and 1G HOWEVER some test the 256mb card had N/A results...

Below 1680x1050 or less you do not need more than 512Mb. At 1920x1200 it all depends on the game
in how texture & detail intensive it is.
Note the GPU test was used in Crysis not actual game play and the delta there was 20% with 4X AA.
If you are running through or having a fire fight in heavy foliage or there are a lot of effects like at the
end of the game you will see a wider Delta between 512 and 1024MB. Heavily OC'ed cards will also
have a higher Delta and one of the reason the 1Gb card are clocked higher out of the box than 512Mb
cards.
What those test really show is no matter how good the GT is in stock form it is not enough card to run
anything at 1920x1200 all that well and that comes as no surprise.

A 1Mb 8800GT has never made sense to me. It is the G92 GTS card that should
have gotten 1Gb and could have made better use of it.

+1, but I'd be selling my 512 GTS that hasn't even arrived yet :)
they probably didnt make the 1gb gts being that it would be better than a 8800gtx
even though the gtx has much more memory bandwidth a 1gb G92 gts would kill sales of the gtx.
and after saying that i doubt that the sales for gtx's are that good anyways.

So they discontinue the GTX line and the people that have them are so happy because their discontinued product is now super rare and multiplied in value at least ten times. That's how it works, isn't it?

Not super rare, just in limited quantity now.
It was a good investment because Nvidia will not be releasing a card to replace it sometime Q1 and it's still one of the fastest available.
I'm not so sure about the value increasing...especially since new gen cards are on the horizon.

Hehe, I was being sarcastic :) Can't tell if you were :bang head
But yeah, I don't think the GTX will be revamped at all, meaning the GTS won't be either. Maybe once the 9-series is introduced nVidia will bring 1GB to the GTS's, but I don't think it seems likely :( I'd still buy it though if I could, maybe do a $50 step-up if nVidia does actually go that route, and in time for my step-up. :) Even if my resolution isn't pushing the card to the max, if I can just futureproof myself for $50 more, I'm all over it.

Why??? Just drop the resolution to 1680x1050 and play away. Even if you had two 24 inchers side
by side..one running native 1920x1200 and the other running 1680x1050 I seriously doubt you could
tell the difference visually with a good 24".

ya i got the cheapo dell 24' E series,. i am suprised my 7600 Gt can run cs:s on it with ingame on high AA 4x and tripple buffering but i also put mip mapping levels down @ 1920 x 1200, Tf2 stuggles a little though.
this 8800 GT should be fine for what i need for now playing Tf2 /cs:s / cod4 and some ut3, never throught to drop the res, especialy in games it likely wont be noticed, also got zalman s9700 for my e4400 so that will help me cpu keep around 3.2G+
