-got a linksys wireless router(wrt54g)
-wired computer running xp has internet
-wireless laptop running vista home has internet
-both computers have 'mshome' as their workgroup
-router has the latest firmware and is 'secure' thanks to the stickies
-router is running in 'gateway' mode

PROBLEM
-the two computers can't see each other so i can't share files and what not.... pinging doesn't work either...

what to do?

thanks in advance

side notes:
-laptop replaced a computer that recently died, file sharing was never an issue with both(dead computer and live one) computers running in xp

Are you using DHCP to get your IP addresses? Do you have valid IP's when you run an ipconfig? Your router probably doesn't assign IP's when it's in gateway mode. Try changing the mode from gateway, if you don't have valid IP's.

Also check to make sure both are on the same subnet.

they're both on the same subnet

both computers have ips assigned and the internet is working...

try to connect the laptop using a wired connection and see if you can see each other. If you can your router is most likely stopping windows networking traffic.

also, update your xp machine :)

there is a fix for file sharing via vista and xp in there.

can you get onto the internet on either machine?

check and make sure that you have file and print sharing active on both machines....I see you already said that you have them on the same "workgroup name"...if all that fails run the network wizard on the XP machine again.

are you pinging based on IP or trying to resolve?

posting ipconfig/all and net view should make it easier

assuming you are behind a firewall.:)

well i tried a wired connection for teh laptop and the computers are still UNable to see each other or ping each other(i've tried pinging the ips and the computer names...)

same workgroup on both

you dont have one pc in the DMZ range and the other in the normal do you ?

hmm how would i find that out ... i used internet adivisor that came with teh
router to set everything up... i've also checking all the settings manually but connecting directly to the router

i'm going to try updating my windows somehow, sucks cause windiz update is no longer :/

get a screen shot of 'ipconfig /all' on all your comps and post them here.

Any firewalls? Turn them off, when it starts working, configure them to allow file sharing, then re-enable them. Also, make sure Vista is set to Private Network.

another quick question: Intrusion protection in Norton Security Online is what is preventing the two computers to 'talk' to each other... i would like to add the ips or computer names to a 'safe list' but i can't find that setting

anyone know where it is? i went to configure Intrusion protection but the option is not there....

anyone know where it is? i went to configure Intrusion protection but the option is not there....NIS is the worst firewall out there. I have to do tech support for our program (Pathways) and that program is the most troublesome. You can't set rules AT ALL, well....technically you can, but they do nothing. We had a tech remoted into a computer and working on it for 4 hours, and nothing in the world could get that to work except disabling the whole piece of crap software. It is now one of the first things we check for when they are having network issues.

See if disabling parts of it helps...otherwise, good luck with that ;)
