Im running a 24" monitor @ 1920x1280.. I was wondering which would be better for gaming at that high of a resolution. Ive heard good things about the new G92s.. but Im thinking maybe the lack of memory will hurt more than the G86?

The lack of memory definitely will hurt you. I actually ran out of memory on mine last night with High settings in Crysis at 1680x1050 with no AA. Had to lower the textures to medium and even then I think I was pushing 490MB when I finally quit.
However, I'm not sure that the extra 130MB on a 640MB would help you as much as the new G92 core.
If you can, I would wait and see what happens in the next few months, as we may very well see a 1GB version of the GTS, or even the 9800's. You never know ;)

the g92 gt/s will run out of core performance before the ram size becames to much of an issue. Whenever you see things saying that a 1gb card is 20% faster then a 512mb card take a look at the fps of both. That 20% might be 20fps vs 24fps both of which are unacceptable in my eyes. A 20% increase doesnt mean much when both are unplayable.
the only rerson to get a $300 or less card with over 512mb of ram currently is "future proofing" and is there really such a thing in the computer world?
Socket eh?

How did you run out of memory? Overrun just goes to system memory and crysis is shader not memory driven.

i just switched from 8800gts 640 --> gtx --> 8800gts 512
at stock, i spanked my overclocked gtx score by 467 points
the gtx i had wasnt much of an overclocker though, i could only take it up to about 975 on the memory, about 650 on gpu
killed the overclocked 640mb by about 2000 points
i gotta say, i am very pleased with the new GTS
the 512 spanks everything on the market, I wouldnt even consider another card aside from the gt 512.

All I know is that suddenly my FPS dipped from about 35 to 15. I checked RivaTuner as I decided to monitor the memory as it was the first night with the new card, and sure enough, I had just capped on video memory a few minutes before.
SLIGHT SPOILER:
This happened when you first find Rosenthal (however that's spelled) in that dome lab. Right when I entered that cutscene, my FPS dropped INCREDIBLY. I figured it was just because of the massive shadowing going on in there, but it continued when I got out. I minimized and looked at RivaTuner's graphs, and apparently just about the time I went inside the lab my GTS's memory got capped and non-local memory soared. So I saved and restarted the game to clear the memory, and when I restarted I was back to a pleasant 35-40FPS. Then it happened again at the level where you need to call an airstrike on the KPA Cruiser in the harbor. My FPS was steadily going down, I minimized and noticed that I had capped on memory again. So I changed my textures to medium and restarted. Has been working fine ever since, but I noticed at the end of that same level on medium textures my memory was still at 490MB used.

Hi, I ordered a g92 GTS, and my monitor runs at 1680x1050 as well, would running 2X g92 GTS's in SLI would solve this problem? I am not sure how the added gpu would help this situation.

No, SLI won't help. The memory on each card has to hold the same texture information or each core won't be able to fully render each corresponding frame. You don't double your video RAM when you go SLI, unfortunately.

It's not too bad of a problem. For the last few levels I was able to turn the textures back up to High and when my card ran out of local memory I just saved and restarted Crysis. Gets rid of all the textures it no longer needs.

So guys... will I see much of a difference in going from my 320GTS to a 512GT ?
Worthwhile?

You would see a big difference in a game like Crysis, but other games probably not so much. What native resolution do you use?

1440x900 (Viewsonic 22"widescreen)
(edit)... ooops... 1680x1050 lol

Wouldn't it make sense then if they coded that at certain points in a level it unloads textures from the memory? Or is is already doing this just not very well?
In my very limited programming knowledge (no further than VB) I know you can code it to unload things from the memory at certain points. Is it not possible to do this kind of thing on the fly with games? (without the "loading next level" type stuff)

Ya know, at that res, you could see anywhere from 30% to 100% increase in framerate, probably averaging around 50%-60%.

I have the 8800gts 512 and it's worth every penny, especially I got it for 280.

I believe Crysis already does dump some of its textures, but apparently is doesn't do a good job or doesn't do it often enough. I can exit the game with 450MB used and come back with 350MB used.

Nice price! I got the GTS for $360 when it first came out thinking the price was going to shoot up to $400. Similar to what happened w/ the GT. I was wrong, but at least I can use the full $360 credit to step-up later.

Anyone know if the G92 cards still get this (nvlddmkm.sys has stopped responding and has recovered [VISTA ERROR] ) error? (We have a sticky about it by the same name)
