View Full Version : Disk Read Error = Dead drive?

My PC restarted itself at some point while I was out and came back to find it sitting at post saying:

"A disk read error has occurred"

So I've hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and tried booting normally again to no avail, I then tried booting the drive straight from the boot menu and got the error:

"Error Loading OS"

So I stick in my Vista disc and go to repair, let it scan for problems and that but it comes up with none ...

I'm currently installing Vista on a different drive (which I'm annoyed about as I've lost about 50GB of music, game saves and other data) to try and pull my data across from the broken drive ...

Dead drive? or whats the problem? Do I need to RMA? ..

Cheers

I'd say its fine unless it fails a hard drive test. The install just might have gotten corrupted somehow.

Don't have a solution and this is a bit off topic but, the topic title reminded me of my PS2's Disk Read Errors T_T.

Grab a copy of PE boot up and see if you can explore the drive? worse case you can boot into your xp cd. hit R for repair option
type in chkdsk c: /r

I managed to get it booting and it worked for a little bit but then I got tons of blue screens n chkdsk keep coming up with loads of errors .. After attempting to repair I gave up and just did a fresh install over it but got more corruptions .. So i'll send it off for RMA tomorrow ..

My bro is laughing at me tho saying its ironic that the oldist part in my nice n shiny high tech PC (the drive is about 3years old .. when everything else is about 1 year or less) has brought it all to it knees ..
