View Full Version : Seti slowing down IE6?!

I just joined the team. I haven't run seti for over 6 months, and reinstalled it today (v3.03). I have selected 'data analysys always runs' but when I startup IE6 it just stays at a blank screen until I close Seti. This happens under both XPpro and Win2k. It has never been like this before, the only things different at the time was prolly IE5.5 and possibly an older Seti version. Anyone notice this, or knows a solution?

Just wanted to say Welcome Aboard!

As for your problem, I've never seen it on my machines. The only thing that does slow down IE's startup is ZoneAlarm for me. Sometimes it gets picky about letting something through at startup, but after 30-60 seconds it's cooperative again.

My suggestion would be to add the graphical client to your next garbage pickup and download the command line client.

I second that: most people get much better wu times with the clc that the graphical client, although we've had some dissenters:)

As to your original question: when I first started crunching I didn't know about this place, or the clc and I did use the gui version.
I don't recall any trouble with IE( 5 and 5.5)

And Welcome to the Best Seti Team!

Yeah I'm running ZoneAlarm Pro as well, I'll try some changes in settings and otherwise I'll download that commandline client...

When I used the GUI version it didn't cause any slowdown with IE 5.5.....It's strange. Better go here (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/Instr1.htm) and download CLC, SETISpy and SETIDriver they are less obstrusive than the screensaver.

Problem remains the same with the command-line client, I even tried it on a clean install of win2k. A lot of apps really stall when Seti is running. (also tried it at default speed and voltages) I noticed V3.03 is just a few weeks old, is this a Celeron thing?! Can somebody email me the previous Seti version so I can find out if the new client is the problem or not?!

Are you using SetiDriver with the clc?

If so, try setting the priority to low: I usually run on normal priority, but when I am working on a few things at once I'll slow it down.

Crunches a bit slower, but I can do other stuff faster.

You are running other items besides SETI in the background and surfing with IE 6, right?

I have run IE 6, while downloading lots of stuff (3 or 4 downloads) and continue crunching with no interference. But if I try to play DII while crunching, I notice some slowdown in the graphics.....

Some program are more CPU intensive than others, it also depends on your hardware. You are running a dedicated NIC or Fax/Modem? If any of this stuff is integrated and you have a cheap mobo, a lot of the work of the NIC/fax is done by the CPU. If it happens to be busy crunching you might notice some slowdown. If this is the case upgrade to a dedicated (PCI) card. Or decease the priority of SETI. Your time per WU will increase but you'll be happier with the speed of the IE6.

Still with me? Supposing the above was not the problem, you might be running a lot of CPU intensive services. If you really need them, decrease the priority of SETI also. If you can live without them, unistall them.

CLC v.03 is more intensive than previous versions as it looks for Gausians, Triplets and Pulses.....nowadays Berkeley is not accepting anymore WU crunched with older versions of SETI@home.

I run ZoneAlarmPro, MotherboardMonitor5 and piles of other cr@p in the background, and have no problems at all with SETI slowing anything down........

PROBLEM SOLVED!
After I specified a proxyserver for my LAN-connection settings, everything flies! Strange huh?! (there's nothing on my LAN but a cablemodem) But indeed all the apps that stalled before unless I closed Seti were web apps like Kazaa, Copernic, WS-FTP, DAP, but the most annoying was IE6. The only apps that do startup with win2k are ZoneAlarmPro, PCcillin anitvir and Seti. Finally data analysis runs all the time now, heehee!

Oh and Mictlan; read my siggy! I haven't got any integrated cr@p on my mobo. There's a 3Com 10Mbit ISA NIC and while I have the iBX chipset running at 134Mhz there's a 1/4 PCI divider so the ISA bus is also running in spec.
