Yea i just reformated and before that, i had a network with my bro. I tried to set it up again, but i think i forgot to do something. My problem is that, when i right click on my computer, and go to network, and then it will not let me go to network id because it is grayed out. I installed the network stuff from add/remove programs but nothing. I got this to work last time but i guess i forgot how too. Can anyone please help me?

p.s. plese dont give me links to programs that do this because i actually wanna learn how to fix this problem, insted of a program doing it for me.

Nic drivers installed and operating?

Thats the first thing to make sure of, and then network protocols.

I think from what you're saying that your NIC is disabled.

No i think its working because when i go to system and under net adapters, i see the d-link adapter. Also i share internet and that works, and games work also.

Ok, what are the oses?
Have you checked that all ip info is the same (network, subnet, gateway and dns?)

Workgroup names the same?

they are xp and win2k. It worked before i formated my hard drive but now when i go and righ click on my computer then network, the network id is grayed out. Yea the ips are manually set and the subnetmask are too. You know, 192.168.0.1, (subnet)255.255.255.0.

dont think this has to do with the problem, but just to avoid conflicts, i believe that you should be using ip's of 192.168.1.x, not 192.168.0.x.

but i could be wrong, i just thought that the 192.168.1.x was designed for LAN and private networks. thought any others were risking conflicting w/ other's ip addresses.

192.168.X.X is available for use on private networks. I used to use .0 until I got a Linksys gateway router, which uses 192.168.1.1 for the internal ip.

I have my other rigs set as 192.168.1.2 ( this one) and on up.
I keep some segregation in addresses as well: 192.168.1.10 through 15 is for print devices, and 20 through 30 is Linux pcs.

Can you ping both pcs from the other one? Tests ip connectivity.

Wait a minute! I don't have XP, but someone else was having the same trouble: turned out that XP has a built-in firewall screwing things up! Don't remember where it is or how to find it but........

Is your machine defined as a member of a workgroup or domain?

i cant chose because the network id is grayed out.

I'm assuming you're referring to the Network ID button, not the tab. The Network Identification tab under System Properties should display the computer name and workgroup.

Also, is the Windows logon id you're using defined with Administrator rights?

yea i use my name to log in and i have administrator privligaes. Yea the network id is grayed out. It says that my computer name is adam and that the work group is workgroup.

do you think that the zonealarm firewall would be interfering with this?

I haven't seen ZoneAlarm mess with the local settings, only connections, so I don't think its that.

Have you tried removing tcp/ip and reinstalling?

Something is bugging me on this: I've been here before and can't remember........!
