this idea struck me a few hours ago and im not sure if it would work and i want u guys to tell me if the idea works or if I'm an idiot.

if i placed dried ice infront of the intake fans infront of my machine would the gases emitting from the dried ice be a good way to cool off the comp by having it flow in and out of it?

has anyone else thought of an idea like that if so did it work? is it effective? will it damage the pc in anyway?

thanx for ur help...and im new so if its a dumb idea and i dont know it go easy on the insults...

Effects are pretty negligible, I tried it once but got only a 2°C drop in temp from it. Not to mention the fact that as soon as the ice melts/evaporates, you're back at square one.

Yea when dry ice is heated, it goes directly into the atmosphere as a gas. But it is room temperature gas, so it would be pointless.
Now if you put dry ice on your cpu....

Whoa .. nice cooling macci :) Wont it spoil or short-circuit the board ?. The dried ice produces H20 !

hmm so does dried ice turn into water or just go into the air???

because i was wondering if it would be possible to fill up a water cooler with dry ice and put my PC in there what would happen anyone know???

Dry Ice (not dried ice) is frozen Carbon Dioxide. When it evaporates, which is extremely fast, it goes directly into the air. The reason water forms is that it freezes the air below the point where it can hold its water, and it drops its water, and it freezes it (its that cold). Condensation is a problem. I recomend doing a water cooling system, and having the radiator in a fridge. Use Swiftecs information on sealing. Your idea would cause the water to freeze around the dry ice, and it would create a fog around the reservoir. When dry ice comes in contact with water, it warms rapidly, creating a fog. It also freezes the water.

AntmanMike: Can you post a picture or two of your refrigerated radiator? Sounds interesting.

I havent done any water cooling. Im working on cooling an Entire system with a fridge though,

closed cooler and dry ice w/ cpu in there is a BAD idea.

my friend told me how he used to make dry ice bombs out of a 2liter bottle w/ dry ice in it. (i think he added water to help melt the dry ice?)

toss the thing and wait a few seconds...the gas expanding from the dry ice creates enough pressure to explode the 2 liter pop bottle. heh...if you got a tight fit on your cooler, the cpu would melt the dry ice and cause overpressureization.

of course, it would have to be a real tight fit, doubt you could make it explode without actually sealing the cooler itself, but still...

Me and a friend were doing that a few years ago, when we were young and stupid. I've just recently given up the young part of that. We would stuff dry ice in the 2L bottles, squeeze the bottle, then add boiling water, put the cap on, and toss it into the backyard and wait till it exploded. Only after the 4th or 5th one did we notice the "pictching wedge" divots it was leaving in the lawn out back, and all the little bits of plastic everwhere. Try covering those up before your parents get home. Not exactly and easy task seeing as there was no sod left to put back.
