I had a few $25 off $25 coupons for Dell and I used one on a Downloadable game. It worked and I got it for free or so I thought. Later after I got the game I went to My Account on Dell and it shows a charge of $26.89 for the game. So I went on live chat to ask about it and I think I was treated very poorly. I'm not sure what my options are but I know that I was lied to regarding several things in this chat, 1 being that supervisor's have supervisor's called the escalations team I believe. I've dealt with one of those a couple times before. I think I'm going to call Dell's Financial Dept and try to dispute this tommorrow.

01/07/2008 11:36:14PM Nathan Chaney: "If there was a problem with the coupon why did the order go through as $0.00?"
01/07/2008 11:36:22PM Nathan Chaney: "it applied in my cart"
01/07/2008 11:36:44PM Nathan Chaney: "Dell's system should have informed me that the item wasn't expensive enough to qualify"
01/07/2008 11:37:03PM Agent (Sup Rajeev Rai): "Nathan, the e-mail that you have got is only an order acknowledgement e-mail, the order confirmation e-mail signifies the order to be accepted."

01/07/2008 11:37:36PM Agent (Sup Rajeev Rai): "If you check the terms and conditions for the coupon, it is clearly mentioned that the order amount must exceed the coupon amount."

01/07/2008 11:39:10PM Nathan Chaney: "Please provide me with your email, I will email you the page I have saved, not an acknowledgement email showing $24.99 - $24.99"

You should be speaking to them over the phone, not online. Thats your first step.

If the terms and conditions of the $25 coupon states that you have to buy something for MORE than $25, I don't see why their system wouldn't have told you this during checkout...

So lemme get this straight...

Coupon facts as described by the support folks:
The coupon cannot be applied to orders less than $25.00. =$24.99
The coupon didn't cover the cost of the item because it was over $25.00 =$26.89

If the final cost of the item was over $25 why then weren't you charged the $1.90 difference and the rest covered by the coupon?

Shame on you Dell.

While I don't agree with their policy (26.78 is greater than 25...), there were a few times where you jumped the gun and accused them of horrible service.

I work in customer service and that is the last thing I want to hear. The call/issue just goes downhill once a customer is accusing horrible customer service...

I know I got aggravated at a point, but this is ridiculous, I'm calling them in a few minutes.

EDIT: I know they have escalation teams but how do I get in touch with them, whenever that has been done they call me after I request it from the supervisor. I usually deal over live chat in order to avoid the heavy accents.

product is only $24.99. Not the $26.XX. That's tax or shipping, that is not part of the price of the product, so the $25.00 coupon should not be applied. This is what happens when someone tries to get something for free. Please don't go on how it is only a penny less, the coupon states product or $25.00. That's how they keep people from getting the $24.99 stuff for free....

That would have been fine if the system would have just told me that instead of allowing the order...

The one advantage to using an online chat system, is that all that was said is documented and the conversation can be shared much easier than trying to remember everything that was said verbally between 3 people over a span of almost an hour.

Its not as fast as a phone call, but not as slow as email either.

Woooo. Tried one more time with a regular rep asking to have my case forwarded to a escalation's manager right off the bat and she really was nice and is issuing a $25 credit. Posting the chat as soon as I wrap it up.

A good point as well :)

01/09/2008 10:31:19AM Nathan Chaney: "Okay."
01/09/2008 10:32:10AM Nathan Chaney: "Well as you can see an error in Dell's system let my order go through when I guess it was 1 cent too low to qualify for the coupon which I was not aware of and Dell is now charging me $26.89 which I did not authorize"
01/09/2008 10:32:48AM Agent (Shelly Gulati): "Nathan, let me check the order for you."

01/09/2008 10:38:46AM Agent (Shelly Gulati): "Nathan, as per the records I can see that you have used $25, coupon, however, the total price was lower than $25 that is why it has not been applied at the time you placed this order."
01/09/2008 10:39:02AM Agent (Shelly Gulati): "As you are a valued dell customer I will issue you a credit of $25, however, in future please make sure to use the coupon on the greater value."
01/09/2008 10:39:16AM Agent (Shelly Gulati): "Would that be fine with you?"

If the actual price is $26 something then the $25 coupon should be allowed(?). Regardless, the coupon should never have applied to the order if it was not applicable. You definitely had a case.

THEY should be more careful to disallow coupons to apply to orders they don't qualify for. I like how they tried to put their backoffice/shopping cart prrogramming issue on you. BS.

Dell hasn't seen a dime from me in a very long time. There's no need anymore, plenty of other vendors with as good or better prices. Even if I pay 2% more elsewhere at least I don't have to deal with them.

well, i'm glad it got sorted. i think the blame is kind of split here though. you should have known the $25 coupon wouldn't work on a $24.99 item. they shouldn't have let it work though. they also should've cancelled it or contacted you instead of just processing the order with no coupon.

No offense but the agent sure seemed to be nice and tried to help you. You seemed to get irate at him because you wanted to be right.

Coupons are always applied before sales tax.

Precisely, it could be argued as a bait/switch tactic to ensure the sale and forcing the customer into a complicated and lengthy battle for a refund (on a non-refundable item no less  ).

I'm sure somewhere it stated that the item must be over the price of the coupon.

Dell agent's always appear to be nice, because they are using pre-typed responses half the time.

I waited 2 hours to talk to that agent too. Good motto for companies to follow: "The customer is [almost] always right."
