Hi, i need some help, i was going to get some faster DDR2 for my board as my geil is struggling to get a boot at anything more than 3.5 gig on my Q6600, i think the memorys holding it back. So far its at 3.42ghz.

Anyway, was thinking about going for DDR3 as my mobo supports it.

So the question is, What DDR3 should i go for?, i hope to have £100-150 to spend in a month or so time.

My current memory is, according to CPU-z, is running at 475mhz (950mhz) effective. Any higher it says, NO!!!

Anyhelp would be greatfully appreciated guys

Change your memory to something other than 1:1. That way you can find the max OC of your chip without memory holding you back. Then once you find that max OC you can figure out if your memory will run 1:1 at the necessary fsb speed. Then you can pick your memory from there.

I don't think there is much of a selection for DDR3 in that price range...

1:1 is the lowest memory ratio on P35 chipset...there are no dividers, just ratios.

Mmmm, in the Gigabyte bios, version F2, the memory multi is set to 2.50, any higher it wont boot, also if i put it on auto it wont boot because the memory frequency is too high. 2.50 is the lowest it will go, which i have heard is the equivelent of 1:1. Mind you CPU-z shows a ratio of 4.5, heres is a screenshot.
Also CPU-z says the memory is running at 1.8v, but it is rated at 2.1v, so i'm running it at 0.3 over volt = 2.1

Also here is a link a friend sent me with some DDR3 for sale, it is coming down in price, which is why i said in a month or so.

So what do you think??

DDR3 isn't cheap enough and fast enough to warrant a switch from DDR2 for the vast majority of users IMHO.

i am not familiar with Gigabyte boards but i am sure there is a 1:1 selection in there somewhere. 2.50 is clearly 4:5 as CPU-Z illustrates, 2.0 is 1:1 from what i have seen in the Gigabyte BIOS. how to select it is another story. is there possibly a Strap selection? if there is, you might want to change that as it might open up more ratios to chose and get you 1:1 which would then give you a lot more overhead for memory and see if it truly is holding your overclock back.

perhaps someone more familiar with Gigabyte motherboards can chime in with the helpful info. talk to me about any Asus board and I am aces but me and Gigabyte have never met ;)

i have to be honest and agree with Maverick0984, DDR3 isn't worth it right now, especially if you are looking at the budget PC3-8500 or PC3-10600 kits. a crappy PC2-8500 kit will outperform those or come within inches of doing so.

the only time anyone should consider jumping to DDR3 is with a minimum of PC3-12800 and even then it is hard to justify because the performance just isn't there. it is true, DDR3 prices are starting to come down:

DDR3-1600 7-7-7 Micron D9GTR for $300 CND is pretty decent. it still looks like crap compared to $100 PC2-8500 Ballistix but it is certainly almost worth considering at this point. even with that said, the gains are very minimal in almost every program...especially gaming. HTH

Yes this helps alot, i will have to do some investigating about the 1:1 ratio thing. As i said the lowest it can go to is 2.50, mmmmm time to dig around in the bios abit more i think, or get some super quick DDR2 lol
