I know software RAID is pretty much out the windy...
so is it better to go for an on-board RAID...
or a PCI raid?
the external's seem to vary in price pretty large..

the nice part about a RAID card, is you can switch it from board to board. I can't say there's a real difference in on board or card type, but once you trash a mobo, you have to pay the extra for another board with on board RAID. If you use a card, you can move the card to the next board and not have to pay the extra for on board.

I agree, tho usually you pay only $10-20 extra for on-board raid, but if you trash 2 or 3 boards a year you'd be better of with a PCI raid card.
I also recommend you (when you buy a PCI Raid card) to get a U-133 card cuz these are the future.
So far I've had good experience with Promise cards (not sure if they sell U-133 cards...yet), the Advance cards are cheaper but I cant tell you how they perform.
