Well I got to trying the beta, and this game is amazing, it's like living your music.
The feeling starts to fade away when your hand starts to cramp, but it's still great.

Simple things like bumps on the path or things like color = tempo, along with bpm changes and pauses all becoming visual.

You simply just pop in a song, I've only tried .mp3, .flac, .ogg (no DRM plays to my awareness) it spits out a track in about ~5 seconds for my rig.

FPS at 1600x1200 at max settings I pull ~90fps with my 8800GT.

Along with 11 "ships" each with varying abilities and play styles. (One ship is co-op)
If you go with Pointman or Pusher it becomes more of a puzzle game rather than death dodging. Same goes with playing slow or fast songs.

Main Webpage (When it comes back up): http://www.audio-surf.com/

Bad news is the beta is closed for now BETA 2 OPEN! NEW AND IMPROVED!, but the game should be releasing soon.

I whipped up my crappy attempt at DragonForce - Fury of the Storm (Good tempo + congestion) while my hand was in the middle of cramping and I didn't know how to use the Ninja Mono's left click. (Whoops!)
Here's the ending part of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8V8htkE7WE
After you've finished a race it will upload your score, ship, and nickname with your bonuses to other people that played the same song as you!

And here's a slightly better attempt at a similar song ;) (Not me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-z6YK92otg

Here's a slower song where the player is playing pointman:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JROWtJgdHkY

As you can see it's more of a fast paced action puzzle music game...
Trying to rack up combos of 3 or more of touching colors, score ranking from red to violet in points (3 red = 240 points / 3 violet = 30 points). Higher combo = more points.
Power-ups like Paint and Shock add extra stuff to the mix, along with white/black blocks and swaps along with multipliers, unique ship abilities, and end bonus for specific goals.

Some songs are just nice to cruise through:

Hopefully February! :attn:

To have fun of course :) You wouldn't know if you haven't played. It's like crack.

Mono (Not ninja) while playing any song is pretty relaxing.

I wondered why he sounded familiar...

The Antikythera Mechanism

I'll see which mode is best, may not be appropriate for ninja mono.
Also might need to trim the song a bit, AudioSurf currently has a weird max length. People say anywhere from 12 minutes to 20 minutes.
Length also means I have to cram it into 100MB for utub (see: stage 6)

p.s. if anyone knows how to get fraps video to work with DivX encoding (Accepted by stage 6) I'd love to know. Get some good quality videos up.

Heh, I just checked the e-mail and he seems to have addressed everything that people on the forums asked.

-Mono Pro added (Awesome)
-Ninja Mono and Pro Mono can jump (Awesome)
-Pointman Elite can use the shoulder and can scoop 4 blocks into a queue for later (Awesome)
-Antialising is now in the options (Awesome)
-The song selector's text can be made smaller (Awesome)
-Freeride now displays the percentage of traffic hit (Awesome)
-Maximum song length increased to 25 minutes (Awesome)
-When collected, blocks become hollow so they don't block your view when flying up to the top (Awesome)
-More tracks have corkscrews (Awesome)

Er, yeah, but does it work with non-gay-hair-metal songs?Yes. I've thrown classical at it, and it comes out very fine (also, since classical tends to be very well defined in progression, you can clearly see differences). I might throw up a video sometime.

Mpegger
01-20-08, 05:51 PM
I meant it only allows 3 songs to be played before you can't use it and are "forced" into buying it. Hell, after the first song you have to sign up and login. 2 songs after and thats it, no more usage till you buy.

3 songs (imo) is hardly enough to even try it out. It took me longer to download the demo because of the site (wasnt even getting 1/3 of my total download bandwidth) then to try it out.

The only thing I'm having issues with is that I can't play my iTunes m4p files (only supports m4a) and the fact that none of my songs have a real titles (I drag & dropped my music from iPod... So I only have id3 tags).

Looks fun as hell though. I still maintain that the best way to 'feel' your music is Stepmania :) Nothing beats hitting 16+ keys a second with 3 fingers on one hand to a song that has over 2000steps in just over 3 mins, perfectly in sync with the beats of the song :D

Ill definitely be looking around for this game though. It might even persuade me to reinstall Steaming pile of ****

In AudioSurf a completely unique track is generated for ANY song you may have. Colored blocks fly by to the beat of the music and you collect as many as you can, while avoiding grey blocks which harm your combos and high scores.

In GH notes pass by and you have to press the correct note while "strumming" the guitar. The track is straight, and you can only use the songs that come with the game. Similarities with AudioSurf: both are music related games...

In DDR arrows come by relative to directions on a dance pad. They come by in a straight line, and you have to step on the arrow that appears on the screen. You can only play the songs that come with the game (AFAIK). Similarities with AudioSurf: both are music related games...

all this of course IMHO

You can only play the songs that come with the game (AFAIK).

Im saying this to prove you wrong, but just to let you know something you may not know. There's a huge community of custom 'simfile' makers out there. There are many thousands of songs written for DDR/ITG/SM/IIDX you name it.

My Stepmania folder (stepmania being a pc port of DDR/ITG) has around 4000 songs in it, and there are plenty of more songs I could download but just dont want to. Main reason for this is that (no offence to simwriters out there) most of the simfiles are crap. It takes a lot of skill and a heck of a lot of time to produce a detailed, and in sync, simfile.

Anyway long story short, yes, you can add as many songs as you'd like to DDR/ITG.. the tradeoff is you need to make them yourself. I admit, AudioSurf is awesome in the fact it dynamically creates its own files.. thats an awesome feature that at times I wish DDR had.
