Anyone spray painted on these? I'm trying to spray paint them black to match up w/ the case.

Does anyone know what type of spray can I should use?

thanks in advanced

The type of paint is really up to you, and depends on what type of finish you want to have in the end. Just make sure you remove the faceplates before you paint them, and lightly scuff them with about 120 - 180 grit sand paper before you paint them.

I used the same automotive spray paint that I used for my case, and didn't even bother sanding the fronts of the drives first. Just sprayed one coat on, and it worked great - dried real fast too (only a couple of hours as opposed to overnight for the metal case). I used blu-tac to cover up the perspex for the LEDs and anything else I didn't want to end up black - that worked a treat. The trickiest problem I encountered was when painting my slot-loading Pioneer DVD drive - I had to rip off the felt guard on the inside, and epoxy it back in place when the paint had dried (figured it'd be best not to paint that). It's definitely worth painting your cd drives if your case is painted - otherwise it just looks unfinished.

That reminds me I gotta go out and get a cd-rom for my second system, the CD-RW in it now isn't mine so I can't paint the thing.

thanks guys for the tips. it's very useful.

sorry for the late reply

Man, I'm still not sure. It'll be easier if i had lots of black CD RW drives to choose from. :)

my friend has a black antec case and he got the black cdrw/dvd drives and the shades are a little bit different. you'd probably be better off to spray the case and the drives the same colors.

What you should be checking is that the paint you will be using should be safe for plastics. Certain kinds of paint like enamel can soften up the plastic enough to warp or worse make them weak so they break when you attach them. You will need a primer for these type of paints also sanding is a good idea.

If you use any paint with lacquer your going to melt the plastic. You need to be using a vinyl base paint. This site talks about painting the components your talking about.

well crysol method said 120 grit paper ,well thats way too rough, what you need to use is a scouring pad or scotchbrite pad and plastic primer for adhesion (so it wont flake off later)
how do i add an image?
