I recently bought this printer and it should have been simple to install. It us usb plug and play. Windoes should detect it when I plug it in to my usb port but it doesn't. I am using xp, but I don't see how that could be the problem. I am not running a fsb over 133 either so that isn't the problem. Anybody got any ideas. Thanks.

is USB enabled in the bios? do you have any other USB device you can plug in to that same port to test it?

Sorry for not responding sooner; I was on a snowboarding at Snowshoe, West Virginia.
I may have disabled it, but I am not sure. I will go check. I thought about that but didn't think much about, but now that you mention it....
Thanks for the help Shadow:)

Awesome your just the man I need, I am still having problems. Even though I enable the usb controller, I still get the bilateral communication error.
I downloaded new drivers from the lexmark site but that didn't do anything. yesterday when windows was searching for a driver I got a message saying that if I continued it could mess my computer. That isn't exactly what it said but it's basically what it said.
Any ideas.
I am guessing it has something to do with xp, because I just installed the same printer for my grandmother, who has millenium edition, and everything went incredibly smoothly.

That message basically means that microsoft hasn't tested the drivers. It is OK to go ahead with the installation by clicking continue anyway.
The bidirectional error can be caused by a faulty USB cable, a software conflict or possibly a conflict with the USB drivers.
try running msconfig and pciking selective startup and then unchecking load startup items. then uninstall using the uninstaller from the start menu, make sure there are no more lexmark icons in the printers and faxes window, then remove all lexmark drivers from the server properties window (in printers and faxes click file then server properties... then the drivers tab). then restart and reinstall the drivers... also make sure that the USB cable stays disconnected until the installer says to connect it.

start the installation from the CD... plug the USB in when the isntaller tells you to... click continue anyway on all logo testing prompts then the printer driver installer should start... if any logo testing messages come up there, click continue anyway... once that's finished it should be set up.

This may sound dumb, but what are logo testing prompts and messages.

logo testing messages are the messages that come say the software you are installing for the hardware has not passed windows logo testing to verify it's compatibility with windows XP... etc.

Oh, ok. Well, I don't get those during the installation of the drivers on the lexmark cd. I get them when I let windows try to find the new drivers.
What I am wondering is what do I do when recognizes that I have just plugged in a lexmark x83 when the lexmark driver installation prompts me to. it is like having to driver installations running at once. Do I just close the windows stuff.
I have got the drivers installed before and everything seemed to have gone ok, but then when I went to print something I got the bilateral communication error. Have you ran into problems like this before?

there are a few things which can cause the bidirectional comunication error: old USB drivers, using the win 2k drivers in XP, and having a bad USB cable... check the driver version by going to printers and faxes, then to file and server properties. click the drivers tab... the lexmark driver should have windows 2000 or xp under version... if it says windows nt4.0 or 2000 then you need to get the XP drivers.

Oh, my bad...BIDIRECTIONAL.
It may be due to a bad usb cable because I have tried it with windows xp drivers before. I downloaded them from the lexmark site.
I am also having some other problems with unassociated things. I will try to get 2000 installed and then install all the updates for all my hardware; I will try to get the printer working. I will let you know how it goes. I will also use a different usb cable.
Thanks for your help
