Before I ran one computer that would rarely complete a WU. Now I have 3 computers that I will start folding tonight which are all in perfect condition to fold. for my main rig I will run 2 instances on my Core 2 Duo E6750. my laptop will run one instance, and my old P3 rig will run 24/7.

This time it is permanent :) They will always fold :D

That's absolutely brilliant to hear. Way To Fold!

Does the main rig run 24/7? If so, why not use the SMP?

Nice! I came back not long ago. I can highly recommend the SMP client on a dual-core machine!

Things have changed, nvidiaOCM. :)

If you want to really fold, and you have a dual core or more, you simply MUST fold with the SMP FAH client. You'll make 5X as many points, and return a lot more WU's, as well.

Instructions are on the d/l page, right next to the d/l link, and the FAQ for each client. There is an SMP client for WindowsXP/Vista, one for Linux, and others, too.

Deadlines are short, 3 - 4 days is normal for SMP WU's, but it's *perfect* for a dual core 6750. You'll do a WU in about 21 hours.

Be sure you have an administrative account with full privileges, and that you're signed into that account, before you try to unzip the d/l package and run the install.bat program.

And :welcome: back, teammate.

use smp as you can make more points that way. Im running my E2140 at 2.8Ghz and i can finish a WU in 1.5 days if i dont game.. :D

I have a feeling the SMP client doesnt work, when I rebooted it was only using 40% CPU.

jonspd
01-23-08, 10:22 PM
did you follow the stanford instrutions...

It should be using both your cores. there should be 4 cores running in task manager.

For once I followed instructions exactly. I tried reinstalling too.

Please post the very first part of your FAHlog.txt (in the FAH smp directory). Also, please tell us what it shows in Task Manager (right click anywhere on an empty space of your desktop's bottom bar and choose it). What FAH programs are running?

You know why you goofed up, right? You're out of practice following instructions, buddy!! :D :D :D

nvidiaOCmaster

When it is not running as a service, it works fine. After reinstalling and running the console it has all 4 cores showing on task manager. when I reboot it will not start the cores.

here is the .txt

I know several teammates run smp as a service, but I'm not one of them, and it's not a supported feature by Stanford (which is why I'm not one of them! :D ), but there are directions for doing just that.

Let me see what I can find.

This is a problem, though, from your log:

[08:37:20] - Previous termination of core was improper.

There is one right way to stop the FAH client - click on the window (if it's got one), and then press and hold down the Ctrl key, and press the c key. (Ctrl-c).
Anything else can result in a possible loss of your folding progress on that WU. (not always, but once is too much)

For a service install where the FAH client has no window, just use the services control (Start >> Control Panel >> Administration >> Services, and select the FAH service, then right click on it, and select Stop.

You can also go to Start >> Run >> enter services.msg, and again, select the FAH services, right click on them, and choose Stop.

If you shut off the Windows machine correctly (not just pulling the plug, hey hey!), then Windows should shut down any services that are running, correctly. Since I fold 24/7 except for little bit of gaming (when I stop folding manually), I haven't personally used this normal shutdown while running FAH as a service.

I know several teammates run smp as a service

That would be me. :D

Here's a thread on OCF that links to some instructions on how to set it up. Basically you just need to tweak the service settings, takes 20 seconds. Also, beware of reboots while running the service as I describe in Post #3. I've verified that the WU can be saved after a power outage or shutdown/reboot that happened while the service was still running as I describe. That said, with this setup it's also best to set the service to Manual start to avoid trashing the WU after a bad service stop and reboot.

Again, this is totally unsupported by Stanford. But if one takes into account the issues I've pointed out and can live with them, then the SMP client will run just fine as a service.

I would NOT like that!

Good luck, NvOCm.

I have not lost a SMP unit other then in vmware/ubuntu as of now but that could change.

BTW that includes freezes, system shutting down on it's own, and forgetting to close FAH smp client before restart.

If that answers you question Adak.

01-25-08, 12:36 PM
I just wont run it as a service. Its much easier for me to just open it when I boot.
btw guys, system will be offline for about 5 hours as I have to reinstall windows and backup all my data.

I've seen the SMP reject a unit in the command line run after stopping to reboot and restarting from the cmd line. Happens less on Linux for some reason.

I thought it was you, Harlam :D Is the warning about shutting down the rig still true; that you can lose all your progress on your WU?

Yes it is... but if such happens (reboot / power outage) without stopping the service first, you can fire up the client in console mode following the improper service kill. This will save the progress and allow the WU to finish.

This really doesn't happen that often in my case... as most of my rigs are on UPS and I've always made it a habit to stop the FAH service before rebooting even before the advent of SMP. To each his own. I just like the service. :)
