Just built a systm on a Soyo Dragon Plus mobo with an Atholn XP 1700+ and 512M Muskin DDR.

Not yet unlocked or overclocking.
All settings at default.

CPU temp is 38C, fan at 4400 RPM (Retail Box setup).

It runs fine, but geeze it STINKS!
And it has for three days.

Is this normal for the new "organic" carriers? (I'm beginning to guess what "organic" may mean ;) )

What experience have you guys had?

There may have been a plastic covering (covering the thermal pad), did you remove it (I'm thinking burning plastic)? What does it smell like?

arklab

Well, the odor is of insulation - bakelite burning.

Yes, the thermal pad was throughly removed and replaced by a thin coat of Artic Silver II.

The smell IS very slowly diminishing, but still quite noticeble upon entering the room.

I had thought that perhaps it was common.

Maybe this will be going back to Fry's!

That's really odd....maybe take off your cpu and take a nice big wiff to make sure that it's what smells? I'm really puzzled.

well when i got me new 1900+ and msi k7t266-ru For christmas i ran it for like 1 days and it smelt but it is ok now and i dont smell it anymore. Well you know what let it run for awhile and see. cause i think it is just the smell of new hardware.

Maybe its AMD's attempt to coat the die like Intel does, and its failing miserably.

Thanks for all replys.

So, it seems that this is NOT that common.

sfa ok;
The only three pieces that are new in the system are the CPU (retail boxed), the motherboard (an early Soyo DRAGON Plus), and the RAM (which is a single 512M stick of Mushkin DDR).

ALL other components (save the Video card) have been around a while, and of high quality.
PS is Fortion/Source 350W (an OEM PC Cooling), CD-RW is Lite-On 24X, Pioneer DVD, and a 30G-7200RPM Quantum Fireball Plus KA.

The video card is the ATI Radeon 8500DV All-In-Wonder, but I had it up-and-running for a couple of weeks on the old Abit BX Celeron 300A rig.

Still trying to figure this out!

Bye the way, it seems to be stronger (the odor) upon start-up in the morning.

maybe a fan in your case is pinched causing the fins to lightly brush against the edge cause it to grind away.

This happened in a big way to my friend's PSU fan. The whole case got filled with this black dust (plastic from the fan fins) and it stunk real bad.

Interesting problem, but no.

All fans were checked and are fine.

Any stickers come on your CPU? some resellers like to put stickers on OEM chips to keep you from playing around with them <ie unlocking etc>...If it has one perhaps its burning off?

The only bad smell I've ever had from a CPU was when I stupidly left my HSF on the machine I was putting together for a friend. It made a very bad smell, even though I only had it on for a minute! Duh. But, there was no doubt about what caused that smell.

I have a Duron 750 that smells all thetime, it's a few months old and it still stinks. I know that there isn't anything on it that would burn, it just smells.

Big Mike;
Nope, no stickers.
This was/is a retail boxed guy.
Bye the way, it too is a "AGKGA".

Looks like even the Durons can be "stinkers", according to Fiz.

It's really begining to be even more puzzling than I thought!

I wonder if it's the mobo? All the chips SEEM cool, and I used Artic Silver under the north bridge heatsink.

The DIMM is even cooler, so its fine.

You'd think that SOMETHING would stand out.

Any chance that this smell could be your CPU toasting itself? I would remove the HS and any thermal grease ffrom the die and check it for any color variances. I have only seen it on an Intel chip but the die turned from blue to purple in one corner. I have no clue what color the AMD die may change but I would definitely check your HS clearance cause what you are describing smells like a CPU burning.
