Ok I've heard of the 85hz is best for gaming and I've serached the forum for an explanation but didn't find one so I'm aasking now. Why is 85 hz the best/ or should I say optimal for gaming.

At work we sell a kds(190is) 19" that supports 1600x1200@77hz for $212.38 total.

I see on pricewatch they have a 19" kds vs195xp for $176+41.00 shipping. So it would be a total of $217. It supports 1600x1200@85hz.

SO if you were buying one of these 2 monitors which would you get? On one hand you can have a nice new monitor in hand and gaming on the same day at nearly the specs you'd prefer or would you be patient and spend the extra $ for the other that does meet the desired specs?

I'd really prefer the absolute best monitor, but unfortunately I can't afford is....for the forseeable future anyway.

So how important is that extra 8hz refresh? My current monitors don't even come close to 85hz. My current best only supports 60hz ;) so I'm sure to see an improvement :D (one has been around since 95 and the other is 2 years old...and at the time the cheapest I could find and afford.

refresh is truthfully based on your own opinion. I have to run a minimum of 85 hz or the flicker gives me a headache. Yet I know of people who can't see the flicker at 60 hz.

Only real time I know of that you MUST have a higher refresh rate, is with the 3D gaming glasses. They require 120 hz (60 for each lense) to function properly.

yeah i was at a lan party last night and my refresh rate was at 60, and people were making fun of my beautiful 19" triniton because of the refresh. so i'm like okay, i'll turn it higher, (i think its at 70-something right now) and there like wow thats a lot better.

(here's a little secret: i couldn't tell the difference at all:D, i still don't even understand what the hell they were talking about, they were talking about looking at the edge of the screen or something)

Correct. Your real fps = your monitors refresh rate.

unless you disable sync. =)

Ever seen a neon light flicker? That's exactly what it looks like. The entire screen flickers.

has nothing to do with vision...I have 20/20 or 20/15 as well...(been a while since I was tested). Has to do with sensitivity of light. If you are sensitive, it'll literally give you a headache...and that's something I don't get often.

Yeah, my monitor on my P133 runs at 60 I think, and I get headaches after looking at it for about an hour or so. Gotta get up and rest my eyes. On this HP though, I think it's running at 70Hz, and so I can stare at it longer. In my experience, you can't REALLY see the flicker, but it's just something about the picture that makes it seem less clear or sometihng. Really hard to put my finger on exactly what it is...

Technicly, your FPS (that your eye sees) is equal to the slowest updating thing. If your video card is updating at only 30fps, then your real framerate is 30 (assuming the refresh rate is above 30). However if you are shoving out 120fps from your video card, then your real frame rate will be equal to your refresh rate (assuming the refresh rate is below 120...) because your monitor can't display all the frames it's given fast enough.

i can definitely tell a difference with my samsung syncmaster 955df. i run my desktop at 1280x1024, and the highest refresh rate it will handle at that resolution is 75hz. if i back it off to 60hz, or bump my resolution up to 1600x1200 (which my monitor only handles 60hz at), i can definitely tell a difference. sometimes it looks like very faint waves on the screen in areas, or you almost get a "pulsing" feeling from the screen. it's not something that makes my eyes hurt or anything, but it sure is a tad trippy when the room is dark :D :D

btw, how do you change your refresh rates inside of games? is it usually something that you have to change within the game itself? tia

Yah, I gota use 85hz or my eyes start to hurt and I get a headache. I don't like vsync being off either, the tearing drives me nuts. It does take a little more bandwidth to refresh more often, but not enough to affect performance of games until you get around 120hz or so. (depending on your display resolution)

The best way to chage refresh rates in games, in my opinion, is to get Powerstrip and then manually set the refresh rate for your desired resolution. Anytime anything goes into that resolution, PS will force your refresh rate. Another tool that I know of you can do that with is HzTool.

P.S. Please put your shirt on dude, we're all guys here. :)
