what is the best way to apply thermal paste to the CPU? After I clean my mobo every once in awhile I put on new paste and get readings like 130 F so I take it off and do it again and get a temp reading of about 85 F which is about normal so there must be something that I'm doing differently.

The instructions for applying Artic Silver can be found Here (http://www.articsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm) and I guess the advice could be applicable for all makes of thermal paste

Concerning the first 2 don'ts on the instruction:
Important Precautions
Don't put it in your mouth.
Don't squirt it in your eyes, nose, or ears.
I guess the blonde next door will scratch this product off her list.

I saw some one use "scotch tape" and a credit card. What he did was find where the die came into contact with the HS and then put down "scotch tape" along the sides of the die. Then he put a very small amount on the HS and spread it with the end of his credit card so that the paste was even and it was just thick enough to give good cooling with out creating a "barrier".
Keep in mind also that ASII takes 48hours to work to its "groove."

what?!?!? I have to wait 48 -fourty-eight- hours before I put the heat sink onto the cpu?

No. After you put it on and mount the HS to the CPU, it takes 48hrs. to find its ways into all of the little nooks and crannies on the HS no matter how well you lap it.

if you are using normal paste then you can mix it with an alcohol such as methanol or ipsoprol. this thinns out the paste and improves haet transfew, the anlohol evaporates in about half an hour, so you have to wait to then
