I have a USB mouse and am wondering what your opinions are on whether USB mice are better/faster than PS/2?
I play games like Delta Force Land Warrior (first person shooter) and am moving the mouse pretty quick. Does anyone notice a big difference between PS/2 and USB mice while gaming (really fast movements), like response time for the mouse?

i have only used ps/2 mouses, but i have heard that they work very well

Well the USB port has 48MHz bus speed, I'm pretty sure at least. So the update speed will be higher than PS/2. My theory anyways. :D

It's supposed to be faster, but, I've had nothing but trouble with my mice when I plug them into the USB port. They both came with adapters so I just plug them into the ps2 ports because there's an IRQ assigned there for them to use.

in the begenning...God created mice.
God said, it is not good to have mice alone.
so he formed out of the sensor of the mouse, a trackball.
and named it logitech trackman marble.
and God said, "it is good!" (he then proceeded to frag everyone in UT. this is the alternate theory of how God became God)
heh, logitech trackman marble plugged into my ps2 port is the best i've found for fps games period. never have to lift it. it is contoured to your hand. only have to move your thumb.

oh my God this is such a simple question- USB is a hell of alot faster than ps/2. The USB ort supplies power to the light for the mouse so that the optical mice can take millions of "pictures" a second which makes them so precise. USB IS FASTER
errr, its not always faster. as some1 else said, usb has a 48mhz bus speed, ps2 is upto 200mhz.

We all realize that USB is faster, the question is, is it really noticeable to a human, being that we move at such a slower rate.

I really don't think that PS/2 goes at 200MHz, first of all it's an older technology and we haven't even hit 200, only 166 for the new DDR333. I'll do some research into the bus speed of a PS/2 port and post it here if I find it.

Ah ha! The maximum speed for the PS/2 port is 33kHz. That's right, kHz. Here's my source for proof.

I rest my case. :D

but also, the data on the serial port (PS/2) goes 1 byte at a time, whereas I believe (correct me if im wrong) that USB is more than that.

Exactly my point, you'll never see the difference, and I play with a mouse sensitivity of 12.3 in CS.

yes, we as humans do see the difference. Can you really tell me from going to a ps2 to an optical mouse you can't tell any difference. It's so much smoother

Actually the serial port is 1 bit a second. The same as a parrellel port.

I guess main question is, if I have an USB optical mouse and I use the adapter to convert it to PS/2, will I notice a slower speed?
sounds like different people have different experiences with this

USB, if I'm not mistaken, is 400 Kilobits/second or Megabits/second, don't remember which one though

Yes I think you will experience slower speeds because the ps2 port cannot give out as much power or information so the optical mouse is not benefiting entirely of its technology

Some of you are right...some are wrong....and some of you are just WAY off base (what's with the millions of pictures thing? LOL)
The PS/2 IS faster. It runs up to 200mhz when tweaked....or overclocked.
The USB is 48mhz (I believe) and can not be tweaked.
Will you see a difference? Nah...I can plug in my optical in either my PS/2 or USB and still frag you in UT. I notice no difference.
Where you will see a difference however is how smooth the Optical is over the ball. (not trackball) On a good surface, the optical is not only smoother, but never gets a hair or dust in it to cause you to have to take it apart (which is extremely difficult to do when someone is shooting at you) or lock up because the rollers are stuck.
Get an optical...but don't buy it specifically because it's PS/2 or USB.

And I guess the PS/2 port runs on air?

Don't make me look stupid, that's how optical mice work! What it does is takes a "picture", no of course not like a digital camera, but it sends information from the sensor to the mouse to tell that the light being reflected off the mouse pad is changing which is how the pointer moves. If you still don't believe me then go find a site that proves me wrong.

I'm sorry but you guys are bouncin all around... PS/2 is upto 200 Hz NOT mhz... usb is 48 mhz NOT hz... note the mega;) Optical mice do in a sense take "pictures" but there is a lot more to it than that... your not being made to look stupid... I myself do that on my own... own up to it:D j/k...USB is faster.. period... here is a shot of ps2rate http://www.rocketdownload.com/Details/Util/ps2rateshot.htm note the hz NOT mhz...

I think what Shadow meant was that the PS2 port is powered as well. Yes, they (optical mice) are smoother than regular mice, and faster, but when you're in a fast moving game you won't notice the difference. Notice Shadow an I both have USB mice, but plug them into the ps2 ports?

my mouse is usb but came with a ps2 adapter for it and it is more responsive when pluged into the ps2 port, so that is how i got mine pluged in

An optical game is noticable, even in a fast moving game. At a friends house, he has a Logitech Optical 2x wheelmouse, and it works so much smoother, you can really feel it. I have that mouse too now, and it was only $29 CDN. The only problem now is I'm still stuck on my old rig, which doesn't even have PS/2 OR USB ports. I hope my new comp works soon!

I'm gonna put my opinion in on this.
I have a Logitech optical mouse that has USB or a USB->PS/2 adapter. I use the PS/2 port and I installed software (drivers?) that were on the CD that came with it. Initially, when I had it in the USB port, I noticed the mouse moved smoother across the screen than in the PS/2 port. Then once I plugged it into the PS/2 port, I used the software that came with it to change the refresh rate of the mouse to 200 Hz so now it moves across my screen smoother than when it was in the USB port. I do not/did not notice any difference in gameplay or in anything when having it plugged into my USB as opposed to my PS/2 port.
