So here is the scoop. I just bought a dvd player and wasn't really thinking when I did because it doesn't have a digital audio out besides the hdmi. HDMI is essentially a dvi and a toslink all rolled into one right? I know you can get a hdmi to dvi cable but then you lose the audio. Is there anyway to convert hdmi into dvi and toslink?
this is toslink optical http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=2763&seq=1&format=1#largeimage

I have never seen a way to do toslink to hdmi.
You can do digital coax or rca to hdmi, but even that is expensive.

I don't know why it is hard to pull out the audio from hdmi.

AFAIK, its difficult to split the signal mostly because of DHCP restrictions on the HDMI spec. There is a converter that will do it, but its expensive. http://www.audio-direct.com/item.aspx?ItemID=136054f5-d65c-4cce-b9d6-15cfa6990a8c Its called an active audio converter....Audio Authority makes one, model 1312, and I believe Gefen makes one as well. I don't think there's a way to do it otherwise using a regular adapter cable.

toslink is fiber...hdmi audio is not unfortunatley. the picture is digital but the audio is just not up to par. you might want to consider returning the dvd player and get one so you dont have to comprimise on the sound (toslink is much better sounding imho)
