I (along with a heck of alot of other people) have been having problems with my sound with winXP installed. Other strange things have happened, and I cant really put my finger on it. So last night I was cruising around the net, trying to find "the answer" to my problems.........and in one glorious swoop, I believe I may just have.

Here is the "post" from the via forums I am talking about:

http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=13&threadid=5414

Basicaly the guy is saying that XP takes all your PCI cards, and puts them on the SAME IRQ. I thought "yeah right"..........so I opened up my device manager, and checked my Video Card out (supposed to be AGP anyway).......it was on IRQ 11.

Next, I checked my sound card.........IRQ 11. (oh no)

Next, I checked my 56k modem carcd ........(guess?)....IRQ 11

I am not an IRQ expert, but I thought the AGP card and the sound card, and the modem, should each have their OWN IRQ.

The guy did post a solution.......with this link....
http://www.tecchannel.de/betriebssysteme/802/

Unfortunately, it's all german (i think)...........I did a german to english translation, but I still can't figure what it says. (generic translation seems to be the problem...not a 100% accurate translation)

SO, Would everyone please check your IRQ's and report back your findings? ALso, if anyone can read/translate german, I'd be forever grateful if you could read the article, and tell us how to fix this problem.

Thanks for reading all. Please help.

i had the same issue, and it seemed to be slowing my system up a tad. i went into my bios and reserved the irq that the windows acpi system was assigning all of my devices to, which forced windows to shuffle them around a bit. i still have a couple things sharing, but they're not all on one irq like they were before. it seems to have helped me out. hope this helps

its nothing wrong, its supposed to be like that. I cant remeber the acronym, i think its acpi. It's nothing bad, it does that automaticly, since win2k. There is no need for a solution, it is suposidly better this way, allows you to install more things. SO whatever the fix is, you dont need it. but if you want to change it, its in the bios, at least for me, so i guess its for you too. But dont worry, its nothing bad. If there had been some conflict, you would hear no sound wile the video card is in use. But i dont think this is what's causing your problems. make sure you got the latest win2000/xp drivers for your stuff.

If you dont like it you can turn off ACPI...
but if you are not having any problems with your system, i would recomend leaving it the way it is/works

I did not have this problem on my system. Although I always disable ACPI.

Not one day after I get my new comp with XP i have an IRQ error as well. This one pops up when the comp is starting, blue screen, bunch of white text. The error itself is something like BAD_SYSTEM_USER_IRQ1 So it tells me to shut off the computer...I did this twice before it stopped doing that error. After I unplugged the DSL modem that was sitting on top of my computer it stopped. Could this have done anything? And I dont know how to mess with BIOS, it scares me...

I just installed a new usb controller card, and b4 I had 3 devices including video card on IRQ11, now I have 4: nic, video, sound, usb. My 3dmark2k1 score also dropped 1200 points!!!!!!!!!!! I think I'm going to disable ACPI and see if that helps.
