This made sound silly but is there a benchmark for sound cards to find the real difference between models?

Also this sounds even more crazy but can you overclock sound cards?

I just can't tell the difference between my roommate's x-fi and my onboard alc888, is there something that can give me a numerical value on the performance?

That is the thing, the sound you hear and whether or not it is "better" is purely subjective. Now if you consider the frame rate increase when using the X-Fi, then you could measure that by running a TimeDemo in a variety of games.

Also there is a way to "overclock" a soundcard, but it is not in the sense of increase frequencies, but instead changing Op-Amps so that sound output is changed to suit ones taste; but considering you cannot notice the sound quality between the X-Fi and the on board sound, modding the op-amps would mean diddly squat to you.

Get better speakers or headphones and the differences in sould quality might become "clearer" to you. :)

Maybe part of the reason is because my roommate has Z-340 speakers and I have Z-5300e.
