i got this black clamp that fits over a cable. (i got it off of a monitor) and not sure what it is. I think it's for reducing interference but dunno. what is it and would i benefit from using it?

It's not that strange, it's heavy and when you open it in half it looks like the inside layer is magnet and has a rounded out chanel for the cable to fit through

It's a ferrite filter, and it does reduce interference as you thought

so if it is as you say, a "ferrite filter", would i benefit from using it on my monitor or any of my other cables like my my modem or something?

your monitor should already have one one it. (unless this is the one you took off. Only certain components are suceptable to magnetic fileds...and monitors are Very suceptable.
Don't know that I've seen them on anything else but IDE ribbons.

My laptop floppy drive (external) has one. USB cable for my son's webcam has one. Both cables running into the docking station for my digi cam have them. Aak! They're everywhere! :)

Just try it and see what happens. That or hold a magnet against the cable of something and see if it affects its performance. If it goes down, put the ferrite filter on

hmm, interesting idea, BTW- if you happen to "come across" a web site that has information about the ferrite filters could you post it? thanks
