I've got an HP Pavilion dv6000 with a NIC that's not responding. I've tried everything I can think of for the onboard card to respond in device manager.

The toggle is on, I've run a release/renew, the drivers for it are integrated nVidia, winsock didn't do anything...

I removed an old version of Norton Internet Security, ran the Norton Removal Tool, cleaned out those registry values.

I'm going to look around the office for the Fluke Network tester, but other than that, any suggestions?

My guess is a bum NIC card. Any way to test that?

try pinging 127.0.0.1 (localhost)

does it ping?

also, the laptop should come with some dagnostics disc that will go through the nic.

when it's plugged into a router and you do a release/renew what error message does it give you?

Oddly enough, it was the ethernet jack on the wall that was broken. Normally I'd expect a "little or no traffic" error with the little yellow warning sign, instead all I was getting was the red x.

Release/renew was giving me a media disconnected. Odd.. but it works now.

good to see ya got it worked out :)

btw, if it was truely dead pinging 127.0.0.1 would let you know. its used for loopbacks and diagnostics
