View Full Version : Case fan sizes ?
I'm going to buy a couple of case fans soon, but I checked the distance between the screw holes on my case and they're 70mm. Searching the net I can only find fans with sizes of 60mm, 80mm and 120mm. I'm not sure which size should I get ? Any clues ?
:eh?:

Hi Ohgr,
Yes, the fans size avilable are 60, 80, 92 & 120mm, what kind of case are you using??!
um...just a normal midi case I bought from pcworld. It's quite a nice layout and has planety of space for more fans...but these sizes are confusing. Oh I did notice the case fan holes near the bottom front have an extra set which are 80mm, so that fan is fine. But the space at the middle back for blowing air out is 60mm. :eh?:

It's right, coz the room is different from the front/low & up/back holes, for the mobo connectors panel that you've so close to the fan :)
hhmmm...I could easily modify my case to fit a 60mm or 80mm fan, but I dont' really want to physicly change anything yet. Maybe I should get a 60mm case fan for the up / back and I could attche it on somehow. hhmmm...? :eh?:

Plz, how many fan holes you have into your case?
for the moment you have an 80mm front/low that is right to sucks fresh air into the case, and a 60mm mid/back for the exhaust, like the Ps too, infact generally the Ps fans blows out the hot air!
eh? what do you meen by ' Ps ' ?

Sorry Ohgr,
PS = Power Supply :)

Ah OK, at the memonet I have space at these places ( mid / back - front / low ) to place case fans. The power supply doesn't blow out the hot air very well so I'd like a back /mid to blow out more air as the fan space is near the cpu, I'd like another fan near at the lower / front to suck the cooler air in. I think I'll buy 60mm and an 80mm fans and fit them however I can, they should all fit ok though. My current cpu temp is averaging at 55c using the coolmaster HSF my cpu came with. My new SK6 HSF arrived today but I'm now waiting for the Shim to arrive before attaching it to the cpu. Hopefully the SK6 will cool things down enough so I can overclock to 1.4gig :D.
I have to go now though, thanks for the help. http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/images/icons/icon14.gif

I have to go too, see you as soon as possible to continue to speak about the case cooling, there are some other things that you must to know for a 'perfect' case airflow :p
oh, what else do I need to know ?

Generally is better if the air for the intake is the same, or just a little bit more, of the exhaust, and to do it, you have to consider the fans Cfm, nothing else ;)
P.S. don't connect the Delta fan directly to the Mobo! use an adapter for the classic Molex 4pin (the connector for the Hd's or Cd's).

I'll back up Doors on this one. I burned out my motherboard fan header by connecting it there.

i am gon with Godfodda and doors with this one, how many fans are you planning to run??? you might want to think about a fanbus
ooh! wasa fanbus ? :eh?:
I'm planning on connecting two fans...on at the lower front ( sucking air in ) and another at the middle back ( blowing air out ).
I'm not fully sure what you meen Doors...are you saying I should get fans that connect to the PS and not directly into the MB ?

You're right,
if you have a Delta38 fan on the SK6 you have to use the PS alimentation, with an adaptor that permit you to use the 4pin Molex instead of the 3pin Molex, and not the Mobo.
About the FanBus, well, I hope to be right saying that is a stuff to give alimentation to fans, take a look to the image ;)

And here an image of the adapter from the 3pin Molex (the connector that you've at the end of the fan on the SK6) to the 4pin Molex ;)
why cant I attach it to the Mobo ? :eh?: If I attach it to the PS then I wont be able to read the rpm or other settings...:(

Coz you don't wanna fry your Mobo, it's enough? not? :D
well, Delta's fans sucks a lot of energy, and the Mobo isn't made for satisfy this kind of request, so you have to use an adaptor to take alimentation from the PS.
If you wanna have the Rpm signal you have to cut the Red & Black wire from the 3pin adapter and use a 4pin Molex (male) with pins, and connect the 3pin connector with the blue cable to the Mobo.
NOTE: the Rpm signal will work only with an alimentation of 12v, absolutly not @7v, coz it wants a ground of 0v, and not -5v like the 7v mod requires!
ok I understand. Hhmm I'll have to get the adapter then.
Thanks for the help. :D
I got to go now, speak to ye later sometime.

You're welcome Ohgr,
but permit me another suggestion, take a look to the other posts too, coz there you can found all the info that you wants with all the possible point of wiev. Obviously this doesn't mean that you cant ask, you're always welcome like all the other Guys & Gals.
Welcome on board ;)

In general you want bigger fans btw as they run quieter for the same air. Also for 7V it's a "ground" of 5V not -5V (which would give 12 - -5 = 17V). Rpm sensing does work at 5V.
