I am planning on building my first rig, but I am not sure how much power it is going to need. So far I've decided on the following:
mobo------GA-X38-DQ6
CPU--------E8400
GPU--------HD3870X2
memory---4GB(2x2GB) 1066MHZ DDR2
HD---------Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB
display-----Optiquest Q91b 19" LCD Monitor - 5ms
OS---------Vista Home Basic 64-bit
I also plan on OCing and eventually upgrading my CPU and getting a second GPU so I need a PSU that will be ready for the upgrades.

750W/1000W
I suppose I'd better round up to be on the safe side. Thanks.
High end 500 watt unit could maybe handle it. But James gave you some good options. BTW: things like a monitor or OS are not important to consider when buying a PSU ;)

Mac,
James gave you good advice. Any of those units with take care of your potential SLI upgrade and overclocking needs. They all would handle 8800GTXs SLI.

Lol. My n00b award please
In my defense I've only had laptops before this.

A quick question about the case. It seems like most of the cheaper cases that I find have 5.25" external bays but most of the cd drives I am finding are at least 5.7" wide. Is the 5.25" opening just for the face of the drive?

Mac,
It was a valid question and a question that many times is asked when it's too late.
I have a low cost (cheap) Coolermaster Centurion mid tower case. All the bays fit standard CD/DVD drives that I have @ ~5.75." The "5.25" was the size of old floppy disks themselves and the nomencalture never really changed regarding the physical size of the units that fit in there. You should be fine!
