i'm looking at a supermicro 5 slot hotswap backplane
this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121404) in particular.
how do they compare towards just not hot swapping them? i really want to swap them just incase for example, a drive dies :P

I have one of these (http://www.provantage.com/icy-mb455spf-b~7ICYD00E.htm), which suits my needs perfectly.
I'm not quite sure I understand what your question is though. Yes you can remove the drives and put them back in when the system is off, if that is what you meant. Perhaps you can rephrase.

well, i think the supermicro has a better build quality first off :P
not saying icydock isnt a bad product at all.
what i'm looking for is on the fly hot swap really while the machine is on or off. i will be using a raid array in it ;)

after much thought
i'm going to go with this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332011
seems to be the best built. i like the supermicro case, however, it is more used for RAID cards, which i am not going to be using.
the icydock case looks too plasticy for me, and this one is made out of aluminum along with the SATA and power ports are placed good unlike the icydock :P
people reported that there is a defect in the icy dock and thats one of my fears i guess :)

The Icy Dock backplane that I have is made mostly of aluminum.

I'm not sure that makes any sense. Hot swapping is by definition while the machine is on.

i understand that, i guess i had a brain fart when i typed out that sentence :P
but more importantly, the board / mobo has to support hot plug right?

The card has to support hotswap, that's the main ingredient.
