Heres a quick guide I wrote up that seems to fix about 90% of connection issues in vista:

1. Click the Start Button, right click on “Computer” and click on “Properties”
2. Click on “Device Manager”
3. Click on “View” and select “Show Hidden Devices”
4. Click on “Network Adapters”
5. Uninstall any device with “Tunneling” or “isatap” in the name
6. Restart the computer.
7. If it still will not get online click on the Start Button, then click on Network
8. Click on “Network and Sharing Center” then “Manage Network Connections”
9. Right click on each network adapter, click Properties
10. Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”
11. Click on “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click on “Properties”
12. Make sure “Obtain IP an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” are selected
13. Click “OK” then “Close”

Change network from public to private

Click on the Vista flag > Control Panel > View Network status and tasks (under Network and Internet). Check out your network for Public -vs- Private network. Click on Customize to change.

Turn off Protected Mode

Open IE > Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > Go to each zone and turn off Enable Protected Mode.
