is anyone else scared if they mess with there new chips alot they may be broken?
Cause i sure do.
How much wear and tear can certain compnets in a system handle like i know cd roms handle alot and so do some other but it is scary to use liquid to clean your cpus and stuff?

Well...since I have a "couple" of computers, I'm not too nervous, but I also hate wasting money! So I will try just about anything, but I do research whatever my project may be fairly thoroughly first.

I haven't wrecked any "good" cpus yet, but I have burnt up a couple of k62 450s, one recently ( and I miss it!:( )

I wrecked a great GeForce 32 ultra a while back too.

I keep a spair processor...

Its a duron 750.. lol.. only chipped 1 time, still runs stable at around 850..

As for mobo.. no worries.. i got 3 systems... this is my web system... (333 celeron @450)

Game system = 1.6 Athlon XP (Broken: fried CPU)

My server (for counterstrike) = 900 mhz duron @ 900

To me, throwing around money really is bad... but i carefully research my projects before conducting them...

The Athlon XP was a lemon i supose.. posted @ 1576 booted in XP.. gave a Illegal op... hit reset... clocked it down to 1.4 ... reset again... keyboard error... reset... nothing... it shut itself off... pitiful my server is faster then my gaming pc... but oh well... ill just save up... i guess the moral of my pointless story is.. why fear it.. just do it.. if its gonna break.. its gonna break.. might as well end it now and start over...

I think the key here is what the others have said. Before you do something - know what you are going to do and how to do it. Most things get broken, burned or damaged due to the fact that the person was clueless, stupid or reckless. Very occassionally something breaks through fatigue like the plastic lips on the ZIF socket. (was my worst nightmare). If you read as much as possible and find out how its done and you have a plan then things generally go smoothly.

If you had the right audience, Overclocking would make a great Stand-Up comedy monologue routine. It's almost indefensible from a pragmatic point of view. You buy a $50 CPU and spend an additional $100 in cooling effort to overclock it to the point where you could have just bought a $150 CPU. I say this tongue-in-cheek because I am as guilty as anyone of this pursuit. You have to love experimenting to justify the time, effort and expense. I do but I have great difficulty explaining the appeal to another computer enthusiast who does not. What I have seen in myself is that I have grown conservative as I have evolved my rig. As money finds its way into and out of your pocket and into your PC, you have more invested in it and hopefully a better rig. The more you have invested in it, the less likely you are to mess with the setup under the fear of ruining it. Back when it was just me and my trusty Duron 600 (at 1100+), it was a brave new world. I tried just about any experiment I could cobble up to see the effect it had on speed and stability. The knowledge I gained and the fun I had is priceless. I think for many overclockers, catastrophe is one of their prime reasons for upgrading their system. They flirt with the edge of disaster, knowing that if they kill something, it will spur them on to "finding their wallet" and getting something a little bit better. It's amazing how you can scramble for some money when you are suddenly shut down. Kind of like a junky going through withdrawal. This is a great hobby and the past year or two has been a wonderful time to be an experimenter. I believe the laws of physics will eventually compress what can be affordably achieved working the edge of speed. In the mean time, it's great to have a rig that is waiting for software demands to outpace its ability, if only for a short time. :D

Open her up already!!!!!!!! Unlock & have some fun. I got a cure for the fear;

MAKE SURE YOUR WALLET HAS ENOUGH MONEY IN IT TO BUY A NEW CPU :D

It's the only way I get to calm my nerves before I do something that can be a little worrying since I too have but one puter:beer:

Dugans cure for Fear of Breaking Something In My PC:

Have lots of 'em!

I still would hate to wreck my two top machines (XP 1800 and PIII Dual 1000) but that gives me plenty more to mess with.

I DID wreck my oldest: K6-2 450, R.I.P. and I miss it:(

But, what the...., maybe I'll go see what I can find for deals!

I got $50 in my pocket, enough to buy a computer, if you are a cheap s.o.b. like me!

well i guess the fear is gone cause i just burnt up my athlon xp 1900+ that is just crappy is there anywau amd would give me a new one becuase what happened is the stock heat sink popped off while i was using the computer and then i couldnt get to the power supply in time to pull the plug

Arrrgh! I hate that sinking feeling in the stomach. If that CPU doesn't have any obvious overclocking scars on it, I'd certainly go after AMD on that one. Their stock HSF should not fall off. Now if you broke one of your Zif tabs while installing that HSF, didn't notice it and zapped your CPU, then you should suck it up and accept the blame. Likewise if you installed the HSF wrong. Though I don't believe in making other people pay for my mistakes, I do believe in making them pay for theirs. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you nevertheless.

That's great news, well kinda, in view of the circumstances. Did you say you have a spare CPU and HSF until you get that one replaced?

well i sort of until they answer my email i have a spare cpu and heatsink but when they ask me to send them the cpu and heat sink i will just have a cpu but i can get one for like 10$

Well, i think that's the same for everyone..

But

When you build a CPU, You hold your breath for a second, when it works its like HAPPYHAPPY! =D
