View Full Version : Memtest found 150,000+ errors on first test?

Is that normal or possible at all? Just making sure it's not a glitch xD
It was doing test #1 and everything was red, kept climbing in the error count to 150,000+, and the percentage was stuck at 72%. I used the newest version of memtest.
Guess I have at least one bad stick of ram? Now I have to do the plug one in...test...plug another one in...test...wish I could just return both -_-
well try an earlier version if you are using memtest 2.00 as it may be a glitch

I think I used my last empty cd lol
I used 2.0, from http://www.memtest.org/, did I use the wrong one? Theres also a memtest.com

Errors in Memtest do not always = bad or defective memory, often it's a simple BIOS setting such as voltage. If you are runnning stock SPD then yes, it could mean bad memory. I would try another BIOS/different slots on the board before jumping to any conclusions.

My memory is set to to +.4 (2.2v, the official voltage of the memory), I think the Bios is the latest one =/

I ran 1.7 and it only found 400 errors after going through all the tests once, strange.
are you using the stock timings?

If by stock you mean the timings the memory is officially said to have, yes. 4-4-4-12, 2.2v. It's only running at 780 too, I put the CPU back to stock.
hmm....
do you have another machine to test the memory in?

Nope =/
I haven't tried taking each stick out and testing one by one, nor switching the DIMM positions though, will do that after I eat.

UnrealAlex, I came here to post a similar thread and just noticed that you have almost the same hardware I do. I just bought a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard and Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 1066.
I had a couple BSODs during the install of XP. I have not built a new PC in many years, so I loaded the fail-safe BIOS defaults. I reasoned that I could go to all optimal settings after Windows was installed and loaded with good drivers. I was able to install Windows. As I installed updates, etc., I got more errors within Windows then a couple BSODs. My primary STOP error was 0x0000008E on Win32k.sys. All research indicates that this is a RAM problem.
I downloaded the latest version of Memtest86+ and got thousands of errors. I started the methodical dance of testing each stick in different slots to determine if it was a bad stick or a bad slot. I have DIMM slots 1 through 4. Slots 1 and 3 are yellow and slots 2 and 4 are red. I only tested the yellow slots. I labeled the two sticks A and B. I only got failures in Memtest if stick B was in slot 3. I performed the following tests more than once with the same results.
One stick only
Stick A alone in Slot 1 = PASS
Stick B alone in Slot 1 = PASS
Stick A alone in Slot 3 = PASS
Stick B alone in Slot 3 = FAIL
Two sticks (Dual Channel)
Stick A in Slot 1 and Stick B in Slot 3 = FAIL
Stick B in Slot 1 and Stick A in Slot 3 = PASS
Is this at all common? Should I be worried that things will fail later?

I'm not sure ColdMiser but I got the STOP error 0x0000008E BSOD at one point as well after the reformat, only once though. I'm gonna test my memory in detail now and see what happens.

1t or 2t?
I had this problem with a pair of sticks every time I put it in 1t, and it was defaulted to 1t.

I'm not even sure what 1t or 2t is :(

Does your computer even operate???? We never use Memtest at my job for a reason. It never gives consistent data. Sure it can test if your memory is stable in hours, but we can generally diagnose if memory is the issue far quicker than memtest.
though if your getting memory errors i can tell you for sure, the memory is messed up.

Ditto.
Things are stable after moving the sticks around. I ran a few memtest passes and every windows based stress test program I could find for a couple hours. The system is steady as a rock and fast. I have not had a single error in any program. I am satisfied.
