The Stepping I've seen for the E8400 is CO, is the next stepping out yet.

what? 4.2GHz easy air overclocks arent good enough for you :P

I was under the impression C1 was "retail" stepping and C0 was ES? From an article I read on XBit this morn it said that yorkfields are using C0 atm and when they are pushed into retail will be C1. I know yorkfield isnt wolfdale, but its essentially the same I guess..

This is what i have found so far http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=2558&sSpec=&OrdCode=

Is there no possibility that the bios on our motherboards are not fully optimised for 45nm yet?

Is there no possibility that the bios on our motherboards are not fully optimised for 45nm yet?from what i have been reading the bios is reporting different readings on the same Bios, that leaves the temp sensor.

Where do I find the stepping on my chip? I've got one NIB in front of me. Nothign on it says anything about C0 or C1.

The only way to know is the S stepping code - the SLAPL is the only code for the E8400, as far as I know. New revs would have new codes.

CPU-Z tells you, type it into google and you'll find it.

I just put my PC together yesterday.. I have pushed it to 3.5ghz.. maybe I should go higher? I heard that @ 4ghz you are unstable w/ air cooling and start failing stress tests.. Thought maybe to keep it semi-safe w/ .1 over default voltage.

No new steppings yet but check your batch #
Try to find some Q745A or Q746A for the E8400 or Q740A Q743A Q745A for the E8500 (look at the fpo/batch # on the bottom of the box)
These are good overclockers just gotta tweak your memory on some boards depending what youve got.
I got lucky and recieved a Q746A off of buy.com about 1 week after they went retail.

4Ghz is stable for me but temps are on the edge for me on full load. 68 on core 2 and 60 on core 1 is about the limit i would ever want to go.
I rarely stress my system for anything much really as i use my xbox360 for gaming and the most action my E8400 sees is Photoshop3 & Dreamweaver and FL Studio7 for my music creation.
With intel speedstep on too i run @ 2700 a lot of the time so no problems really.

Frankly, 4GHz at 1.36vcore is not so good. My Q743A would do 4.3GHz at 1.344vcore. I sold it because I was not impressed with the temp readouts and now I have a Xeon3110 (same as the E8400) Q746A and it too runs 4GHz at 1.36vcore. But on this CPU the temps are stuck at 45C until you load it up.

Finally intel has fixed the temp sensor in the E0 Wolfdale stepping,This is what i was talking about.

What the idle tempature?
If you use Realtemp it will give a close to what its reading still not exact but really thats what you don't want, you want the actual temp under load.

I have no idea i always run a game player/sever in the back ground the CPU is 50% under load the whole time.

The E8600 is E0, so I assume E8400/E8500 will follow the same path and release E0 steppings as well.
the 8200 8400 and 8500 will very soon be on E0 stepping and should allow 100-300 mhz more for the same voltage.
I will echo this. . The E0 stepping is due out and it is supposed to be a big improvement as well as fixing the temp sensors.
