I have just attached an EZ Connect USB/Ethernet converter for connection to my ADSL modem. I want to use the PCI Card (previously connected to the modem) to network my laptop. Installing the driver for the USB connection is not a problem. however it seems maybe that my Network dialog box is not working.

I need to bind a TCP/IP protocol to the USB/Ethernet converter, however when I try to add one it simply flickers (as if it received my mouse click) and then does nothing else (ie. it does not bring up a dialog box to select the Network Protocol).

I also tried to tick file sharing however that doesn't stay ticked, they just go back to blank. Which leads me to think there's simply a fault in my Windows 98.

Are there any suggestions on how to fix it other than reinstallng Win98 (which I really only want to do as a last resort).

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice.

You could try to uninstall your network componets and then reinstall the from a clean slate so to speak.

My concern with that is that I may not be able to reinstall any of them, then I'm back to reinstalling Windows (which I only did recently anyway). Just a pain to have to reinstall everything again, update drivers etc.

try just uninstalling the tcp/ip and then reinstalling it and see if that helps.

Do you mean uninstall TCP/IP itself? If so how do you do that, through add/remove programs, windows setup? Or do you simply mean to remove TCP/IP from the Network dialog box. (I can't add a new client, service or adapter either - not that I want to just that it won't allow it). Thanks for your advice, this should have been so simple yet is damn frustrating.

goto control panel and open network and highlight the first tcp/ip entry and click on remove. repeat for all tcp/ip entries then let it restart. when it restarts go back to control panel and open network and add tcp/ip back. all should be added when you add one

yep. I may need to give it a try, the only problem being that if the same problem continues then I have lost all TCP/IP therefore my internet connection etc. until I reinstall Windows.

if it doesn't work you are still where you are now.

Not quite, at the moment my internet connection still works as it has an existing TCP/IP working, it's just I can't add another. But still, probably worth a shot.

I do techsupport for a dsl company and both of thoes are trouble sooting techniches that I use everyday to help customers. This doesn't mean it is totaly safe but the tcp/ip should renew the tcp/ip stack and give all of the adapters a new tcp/ip config.
