View Full Version : I bought a 2900XT in July just to fold...

Back in July I took a leap of faith by buying a 2900XT. I did it for the sole purpose of using it with the GPU F@H core. I had been an nVidia guy for the past 10 years but went with this R600 over a G80 thinking the F@H capability would make up for it's poor texture filtering and enormous power draw. WRONG! There still isn't a F@H R600 core due to a glitch setback over 6 months later.

Did anybody else make the mistake of buying a 2900XT? I could live with a nice 3870 with the low power and extra features but his 2900XT hasn't payed off. Who else is wallowing in 2900XT hell? :bang head

I didn't spring for the X2900. I did buy a X1950 XTX that I didn't need just to fold on. I found with the SMP client that GPU folding on a multicore cpu isn't worth it in terms of points/watt. You'd likely have found the same thing if a client HAD been released. There now, I hope that makes you feel better. You can quit beating your head against the wall now. :D

r600 sucks, i got a 2900xt cheap and still ditched it. then i got a 2900pro and it clocked like crazy and it still sucked for gaming. The r600 is a benchmarking card on its best day, evena stock 8800gts 320 whoops a r600.

massive heat and noise and CHOPPY AS hell, I had to run it at 1280x960 with stuff turned off and no AA to get same frames I do with a 8800gt at 1680x1050 with 2xAA and max settings in COD4.

I ran G92 sli with the GTS and GT's without issue but CCC was giving me inadequate power warnings while i was overcloking one r600 LOL

Sell it even if its only for a couple hundred dollars and get a g92, even the newer low power ATI cards are not as good. the new 8800gs for $160 is giving the 3870 a run for its money already in games.
I say in games because you'll see benchmarks tell a different story.
I borrowed a friends 8800ultra and beat it in 3dmarks with a $170 2900pro lol.

The X1950PRO 512 meg was on the approved list of folding video cards, so that's what I got over a year ago - for about $200. It's not folding correctly now, though. I haven't taken much time to figure out why.

How much did that 2900XT cost 6 months ago?

You've got to be careful with those leaps of faith in folding. I prefer to go with the tried and true. Ditch it and get a Q6600! :D

I payed $430 for this card when I got it. I have a Diamond HD 2900XT 512 OC. It runs at 800core/900mem. I wouldn't mind this card so much if it drew a lot of power because it was incredibly fast and could fold like it was advertised to; However, this card is slower than Nvidia cards, has no UVD as advertised, and draws more power at idle than some at full load. I'm tempted to move on to a 3870X2 because it uses slightly less power under load as my current card LOL! I want to see how well it will fold when the new client does come out. Its either that or go with a G92 GTS right now.

Let me ask you GPU folders this: Did the GPU client ever work with Crossfire setups?

I believe I read that it does not work with crossfire. There is a multiple GPU client, tho.
