i admittedly don't know much about servers. this one has a free upgrade from a single xeon 5110 (dual) to two xeon e5310's (quads). i think it might be a mistake on dell's part.

a dual quad setup for $750 seemed pretty sweet to me. if this isn't a deal, it's okay to say so, i'm not attached to it or anything.

It has a free upgrade to the Xeon 5310 for $0 which are Quads. So a Dual Quad for no additional charge.

Nice deal.

I agree thideras, dell has been slacking on checking for errors on prices before posting up an item.

Although I could see intel discounting their chips to dell quite a bit, especially now that Dell announced that it isn't selling AMD chips in custom built systems anymore.

damn... an 8core server @ 1.6ghz a core... u could easily padmod them to 333fsb and have a 8 2.0ghz cores... that would be some sweetness.!

yeah! i found a good deal :santa:

and typos with dell usually equal cancelled orders. i would speculate that they might not catch this though since it's part of a build and not a single item.

We just ordered a new Dell PE 2900 a couple weeks ago. For only $100 we upgraded from a Dual Dual core 1.6Ghz to a Dual Quad 2.13Ghz. They have been running some crazy deals on Quads.

It is the correct deal. Ebay will bring $900-$1000 for this system, should you resell.

So who's gonna pull the trigger and try it? ;) And only $20 to go from 80GB to 160GB, not bad. Double your RAM for $90 too.

"Not it" just in case we are still playing that way.

How do you make money when anyone can go to the Dell site and get the same thing? Just wait for the deal to be over on Dell's site?

How do you make money when anyone can go to the Dell site and get the same thing? Just wait for the deal to be over on Dell's site?Because most people are not smart enough to check other places, they just see it is cheaper than the other ones on eBay. Must be a good deal!

$90 for a gig of RAM? Ummm... No thanks. This thing looks like a good deal, but remember that that's "Registered" RAM. Sounds like it doesn't play well with others sticks that you have lying around the house.

you can't get a raid5 card unless you get 3 or 4 hard drives, right? that's what it seemed like to me... sucks! :(

Those are 667MHz FBDIMMS man, check newegg for the current prices, then you'll see $90 for going from 1GB to 2GB isn't too bad ;) I'd rather have the Dell RAM than Wintec brand  And yea with a server, you're not gonna be popping in your 1000MHz or 1200MHz DDR2 sticks ether :p

You'd pay through the nose, PLUS those drives would have warranty through Dell. Better off getting your own RAID card and drives, mfgr warranty, AND cheaper

You can get a set of Kingston FB-DIMMS for $70 (2x512Mb), Wintec @ $90 isn't the cheapest (or even the best) option here.

One thing to note, this server will NOT accept Harpertown processors

Sad thing, though is you wouldn't see many more PPD than with one Q6600. you can pad-mod these things, but they're still under 2ghz. Not that it's not worth doing, but perhaps not worth doing for that amount of money.

If you could only upgrade the graphics this thing would be an awesome main rig !!!
