So 1080p is better than 1080i right? What do most 37s like this go for? 1000+ ?

The p stands for progressive scan which means that the screen refreshes in a consistent up-to-down way, whereas i means interlaced so that means half of the lines of resolution update at once and they quickly flicker back and forth, which causes blurring.
720p is basically the same as 1080i resolution wise.
Also Westinghouse is BUDGET. Decent for the money for sure, but they cannot compete with the big names.

I've got a 42" westinghouse and a 40" Samsung both 1080P and frankly the westy is a good solid TV, The Samsung has a slightly better picture but its definatly NOT worth the additional cost. between Olevia, Westinghouse and Vizio all 3 are considered Solid MID range TV's I wouldn't call it a budget brand as there are a lot of other ones out there that are crap

I may be able to pick apart eye candy in games, but I am for price/size of screen first when it comes to TVs compared to some of the screen freaks here. =)

I hear you bro, I mean if I have an extra 1k or so laying around with nothing to do but pay for a 20% better picture I will be the first one to sign up, but I would rather put my money into investments or realestate, you know somthing that will appreciate in value not become worthless in 6 or 7 years ;) , I work waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard for my money

Fair enough, and the westys are definitely really decent for the cash if that is your attitude towards the purchase. I bought my 1080p Aquos to use as a monitor with tax return cash, which has a way of finding its way to frivolous gadgetry every year haha.
This is the LVM-37W3SE... I have the LVM-37W3, which is very similar and I LOVE IT!!! I used it as my PC monitor, xbox 360 monitor, HDTV, HD-DVD, and DVD upconversion... it's absolutely awesome. The only thing that sucks is 1080i input. The de-interlacer in this monitor is very poor, so I see insane ghosting when watching a 1080i input... you either have to sit far to watch 1080i, or you need to try to push 720p or 1080p to the monitor.
For example, I have a 1080i HD-DVD player. I set the player to 720p instead of 1080i to get what I consider a better (non-ghosting) image. It ghosts a lot with 1080i.
I wish they had external de-interlacers, but oh well. The monitor freakin ROCKS for PC, though.
This looks damn tempting as a PC monitor. Any other thoughts on this to be used primarily as a monitor to game on? Are there any others to consider?

Contrast ratio is so low. Would be good for a monitor tho.

Contrast ratios are 99.9% marketing hype and should basically be ignored.
Half of them are claiming to have 10,000:1 contrast ratios, but in the real world no TV goes past ~750:1 IIRC.
In marketing literature for emissive (as opposed to reflective) displays is always measured under the optimum condition of a room in total darkness. In typical viewing situations the contrast ratio is significantly lower due to the reflection of light from the surface of the display, making it harder to distinguish between different devices with very high contrast ratios.[2] How much the room light reduces the contrast ratio depends on the luminance of the display, as well as the amount of light reflecting off the display.
Depends how dark your room is, kind of like a Plasma. Beneficial if your in a cave, insignificant if your in the living room.
I didnt think fixed pixel TVs could do an interlaced image?

All TV's have a limited amount of pixels. And yes LCD's can do interlaced, hence "1080i"
Just a heads up. I bought my LVM-37w3 from the egg on 2-21-07 and 3 days ago my HDMI port died. I just now got off the phone with Westinghouse tech support and they recommened that I try a new HDMI cable. I will go to Wallmart and get one to test it out and report back here my findings.
Westinghouse also has a firmware upgrade page but the tech guy says my monitor is not supported thru firmware upgrade.

if your monitor dies you get to ship it back to them on your dime. Which is spendy. Like $130 spendy.

Dood, I know,,,I'm already thinking about how I can box this pig and ship it for cheap.
I have my wallymart HDMI cable here, but doubt it will solve the prob. Just need to get to installing it. Kinda tired from bouncing thread crappers from the classifieds...YaAwwwWWnnnn~! Man my index finger hurts. :)
Welp, the new cable works great but I wish my HDMI port did. They are giving me a RMA # tomorrow. This thing is gonna be expensive to ship. Kinda lucky I guess, the HDMI port failed 1 1/2 weeks before my 1yr manufacturers warrenty is up.

This is not really true. 720p has a lower resolution, but contains more data because it includes a full frame every update rather than just updating half the lines. It depends on a case by case basis which will look better, or if they'll be about the same.

OK, here's the deal. LCD and Plasma TV's (fixed pixel) are progressive by definition. While they can process an interlaced signal, they must deinterlace it and also scale it to fit the screen (if it is different than their native resolution). So you will only ever see 720p and 1080p televisions in these formats (or the old 480p EDTV ones that are no longer made).
CRT's on the other hand can come in both interlaced and progressive flavors, and CRT's also don't have a native / fixed resolution per-se. They can display a range of resolutions without having to scale them.

Not sure if you trust it, but I could swear UPS Ground wouldn't be more than $50-60, maybe even $40... that's if you're shipping within the US.
Sorry for the thread jack wa77ss
Well, I shipped the Westy on Tue and it arrives at the Westinghouse facility in Santa fe CA today. Cust support todl me that they will ship me a new Westy 37" next week and I will have it around the 1st week of March.
My experience with Westinghouse customer support has been excellent. I have had to wait on hold for about 5-6 mins each time but I have always talked to a support person each time. I have had zero problems so far with them.

Yeah, so much I don't want to talk about it. ;( From now on I will make all of my own boxes before I bring ti to a shipper.
I got in on a 37" 1080p vizio TV from samsclub for about $520 after taxes. I love these 37's they are the perfect size.

I don't know I haven't had that great of experience with Westinghouse myself, 37in for the price isn't bad but if the things goes out or has issues less then a year forget it. I'd probably get the Aquos 32in before this, but yeah I'm looking forward to prices dropping even more come 2009.

Kind of old thread but I am about to purchase one of these bad boys from newegg they are $800 shipped no MIR to worry about. Anyone have any other thoughts? And you guys mentioned they are "pigs" they are still light enough where I can mount it on my wall right??
Only thing I am not liking is that I dont see a spdif connector. So I couldnt hook my computer through my video card via hdmi to the monitor and then the monitor to the reciever. :(

Does your gfx card support audio out via HDMI...many don't.
I just hook an SPDIF from my PC directly to my receiver.
wow, reading the newegg reviews. they are BAD!!!
i have had my westinghouse refurb for several months now. KNOCK ON WOOD it's still running fine. the only thing i HATE about it is that the monitor doesn't power off by a PC's power saver feature. SOMETIMES it'll turn off, but most of the time even when my computer's screensaver kicks in and then the monitor power off feature enables, the monitor still shows lighting with a black picture (which of course looks grey).

I know they had a problem with the chip that recognizes what kind of devices are plugged in. It might have something to do with that persons problem.

my DVI1 port is messed up... it just doesn't work with anything. the picture is there, but it's completely out of synch. almost like the old days when a cable channel was scrambled, but the picture has a more digital scrambling effect if that makes any sense - basically, the darn port just doesn't work correctly. :(
