View Full Version : How do I fix?

First off, I would like to thank overclockers.com for all the info in the last 6 months. Without this site, I would have never been able to build my first computer.

Here is the problem: I reciently un-installed Tweakmaster (I think this is the name of it), a tweaking utility for broadband because I didn't see any improvement. I used the uninstall utility that came with the download. After the uninstall, I started playing Tribes 2 and eventually encountered the BSOD. As always, I started a reboot and found that Windows 98 didn't want to load. It would give another BSOD just before the desktop normally appears. I have already rolled back the registry a couple days and tried to reinstall the OS. The registry roll back didn't change anything, safe mode also gives a BSOD, and the reinstall of 98 doesn't work because it says I already have an OS and this isn't a suitable upgrade. I have already tried to rename setupx.dll and setupxw95 to allow me to reinstall the OS, but no luck. BTW... the BSOD gives the fatal exception 0D has occured at 0157:00001B01 error.

My question: Am I missing something? I'm guessing that my OS might be corrupt. I have been doing a slight overclock with the FSB of 140 on an Asus "M" mobo making my 1.4 Athlon a 1.47. My thoughts for a fix are:
1) Find a way to reinstall the OS.
2) Buy windows 2000 (I kinda wanted it anyway) so I have a suitable upgrade
3) Buy another HD, install 98 on it and set up my old HD as a slave to recover my files.
4) Find a way to copy files to my CD writer in DOS to make a back up and format the HD and start over.

I have already done scanreg from command prompt and have had no luck. I don't really have the funds for option 2 and 3 but will do it if needed to recover my files. BTW, if anybody has any suggestions, please keep it very easy to read because as you can see, I am still learning and trying to decypher all the jargon in the forum. Thanks to anybody that can help.

In that you like to rename files , rename the current windows directory windows 1 or whatever you like and then attempt to reinstall win 98 / You could get in the sys via a start up disk and then run windows setup.

Let me know how you make out / Billy

Well, considering I was rushed for time (aren't we all!) I decided to get another hard drive. The new hard drive will now be my standard and my old one (soon to be formated) will now be my back-up that I will save files too. No more burning to CD or using hundreds of floppies, just click and drag I hope. Thank you for your reply. I didn't think of that.

I read something about Nortons Ghost. Do you know if it makes a mirror image of one hard drive to another? Sounds like it will come in usefull if that is the case. Once again, thank you.

well a possible last resort would be to save whatever u want from the hd and format it and reinstall windows.... :D

Can u even boot into safemode?

THIS WILL NOT HELP. Once i tried it myself and .... wininstall perfectly finds windows directory ANYWHERE!

This Tweaker has made some replaces/additions in your system files and possibly forgot to remove it. In fact that must be easy:
1. Look in to Win.INI, System.INI , Autoexec/Config/MSDOS.sys files for unusual strings (usualy containing the name of the tweaker or path to the deleted Tweaker) and remove them.
look in (regedit->Edit->find->"Run" & Look only in Keys & Match the Word exactly) for the unusal keys. Also locate and look in RunServices for any alien garbage.
2. If no luck, install this tweaker again. I donīt know this tweaker but you should set the options there as they were before you have removed it. SAVE. Reboot.
3. Go to this twkr again and find something like .Back to default. or remove flags manually in all categories. SAVE . Again Reboot.
4. Go to uninstall programms and REMOVE THIS THING OFF. (Since you have set all categories back to system defaults, the uninstall prog. can forget all what it wants- it will not hurt your system).
5. Once more punkt 1. Then Reboot.

Hope this helps!:burn:

I didn't have the patience or time to do what you said, although it probably would have worked better than what I did. I ended up spending all of last night (and into this morning) re-installing everything on the new hard drive. Now I will get my revenge when I format my old hard drive {s hehehe. I figure, if I can't find the bug, I'll burn down the house and flush him out! :)

Hello,

I understand ! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do and I have done exactly the same thing as you before.

Wow. all those posts.

Rename win.com to something else....say win.xxx. Do your reinstall. Same works for upgrading from Win95 to Win98.

It's that easy.

But why run 98? Mad at yourself? Pushing self towards suicide?

Why run '98 you ask? Because I don't have the $200 for Windows 2000 yet. Thank you for the other tip.
