i think a big monitor is also on there
every time some one builds these burning hot machines they alwasy try to skimp on the monitor to save money
when you think about it the monitor provides like99% of the info output to you it should be huge.
every time i go down to see my girlfreind im allways amazed at her roomates ( they all have gig systems) and 14inch monitors set on 640X400 it blows my mind

I'm with you on the front USB, my computer desk weighs a ton and dose'nt move on carpet very easily.....it's a real hassle to get behind it.

DUDE, i hear you, nothing pis@es me off more, just like when i goto my mom;s school, the teacher in the school with "computer knowledge" has all the computers in the lab, 30 of em, set to 640 X480, and guess what they are all 1100Mhz AMD Athalon machines, 256 Crucial Ram, Asus Mobos, WD HDD's, 16 MB ATI RAGE, SoundBlaster 16, 17' flatscreen monitors, even 300W Sparkle PS, GOD!

... and all the icons up ...
:D
How do people stand 640x480?? I mean, that's the standard res for a new computer (at least for the ones I've bought...), but it's so... HUGE! So little info can fit on the screen... Even 800x600 looks large now that I'm used to 1024x768.
The only reason I skimp on my monitor is cuz bigger is definatly more, and when building budget, it's the easiest thing to downgrade 1 size and get a lot more money.

For me there are only 2 requirements for a perfect pc: bang-for-the-buck and non-proprietary.
I skimp on a lot of stuff so I can have my "Seti Farm", but there are some things I would really miss having in the two I use (one for surfing, games etc and one to make $$$ with!):
Front usb (usb 2 isn't needed- I don't have any peripherals for it!), A 17" monitor or better, optical mouse, PEACE and QUIET, fast internet, lots of hard drive space and NO CRASHES!
That last is why my User Workstations run on Win2K and WinNT ( need a second license for 2K!)

I agree with front USB. I've just modded my case to put 2 USB ports up front. and the great thing is it didn't cost any money!
the 2 extra usb ports were included with my mobo (A7V133) and were intended to go in an empty pci slot. they now live on the font plastic cover, in easy reach.

I used to have 2 rear USB ports, now i have so many I lost count, but my favorite one as far as convenience is this:

The cool thing is that there is 4 USB plugs on the right side of the monitors pedastal :)
MultiSync IntelliBase™ USB HUB
The MultiSync IntelliBase USB HUB is the ultimate plug-and-play peripheral connection, allowing you to connect peripherals quickly and easily with four convenient USB device connection ports. "Hot-swapping" capabilities enable quick device connections. Both high-speed and low-speed USB devices such as video conference cameras, scanners, keyboards and mice are supported. The MultiSync IntelliBase monitor bases, specifically designed for MultiSync brand monitors,* were co-developed by Altec Lansing Technologies.
* The MultiSync IntelliBase Series is compatible with the following NEC MultiSync brand monitors only: MultiSync XV15, XV15+, XV17, XV17+, MultiSync 50 and 70, XE Series, XP Series, A Series M Series, E Series and P Series CRT monitors.

Here's how I did it. I seem to have lost all the pictures, but if I find them, I'll post them, also.
Cheap and Easy Front USB
Here’s a quick and inexpensive way to add USB ports to the front of your case. I chose to place mine in one of my empty 5 ¼” bays, but you could just as easily use a 3 ½” bay or any other place on the front of your case. You will need no additional hardware if your motherboard has headers and came with optional ports to place in one of your empty PCI slots like my Asus A7V133.
This can be completed with a pair of pliers, a hammer, a utility knife, and some adhesive (I chose silicon caulking because I had it on hand, it makes an excellent bond between metal and plastic, and can be removed if needed.)
The first step is to flatten out the bracket that would normally screw into your PCI slot. Be careful not to damage the small circuit board. Next, remove one of the plastic covers for a 5 ¼” bay, and mark where you will cut the hole for the ports. Make the hole just large enough to allow easy access to the USB ports, but not so large that there is a gap. Use the utility knife to cut the hole.
Once the hole is cut, spread some adhesive on the plastic cover and secure the ports to it. Allow it to dry, and place it in your box. You now have front USB on your case!
Screw the monitor, get a projector! WHEE!
Thems is expensive though.
CompUSA had a 5.25" drive bay that had four USB ports on it, but it didn't seem to connect to the mobo headers, but rather to another USB port. So you had to install the drive bay, run the cable out the back of your case, and into a USB port on the back. me, I'd just cut and splice a mobo header plug onto it from one of the expansion slot USB connectors. Butt connectors r0xx0rz!
