After many years of it collecting dust on my shelving this week I have decided to have another blast at it. The problem is I get 3/4 of the way through the install and I get a "Pak004" error. I've googled many different things but can't seem to find the right answer.
Has anybody here experienced this? If so do you know of anyways around it? The game is 100% legit so no chance of a faulty download or anything along those lines.
I would be greatful for any help. My system specs are in my sig. Thanks :)

Is the disc clean?
Try pulling the files to the hard drive and see if it throws an error. If it does, it is most likely the disc. If it doesn't, run the install from the hard drive.
Try another computer, etc.

Ok I'll try doing a copy and paste job but will it still look for the CD's if I launch setup from a folder on my hard drive? And yes the CD's are clean :)

I had loads of trouble getting Doom 3 installed. The irony is that the latest patch makes it no-cd... but I couldn't even get the damned thing to install.

Sounds like a joy to do then. What patch did you use? Maybe this will help.

I doubt it. Not if you can't even get it installed. It was 1.3 or 3.0 or whatever the latest patch is.
Actually Doom was NO-CD'd in patch 1.2. Standard id Software, they put CD protection on to appease the publisher at release, then remove it.
Sounds like you may have a bad disc, or your optical drive doesn't like it for some reason. Do you have another drive you can try?
Another solution is that id games don't have to be "installed", you can just copy the information over from the disc. So if that's the only file that's having issues, you could get someone to give you just that file. Some people had to do that with Quake 4 because of some faulty discs in the first run.
