View Full Version : HL2.exe crash on exit
Why hello, it's been a while since i've had a problem but Vista thought it was about time to fix that.. the ******* ...
So anyway, my problem is that when I quit games that use HL2.exe it crashes, the game quits fine and I get to desktop etc.. but then I receive a message saying that HL2.exe has error'd and would I like to check for a solution online etc.
After some searching on the steam forums I have tried the following:
* Run in and out of XP compatibility mode
* Run in and out of Admin mode
* Change the threading so it uses both cores (apparently the default settings don't do that quite right, if you're curious I beleive the option was mat_queue_threading 2)
* Changed the DX Level
* Updated Gfx drivers
* Updated Chipset drivers
* Updated Sound drivers
* Vista SP1
This is the only game it actually happens to as well, which is annoying, not D2, Wc3, Peggle, BF2, Bioshock etc... I intend to re-install Steam and its applications tonight but thought i would post here in case anyone else has had the same issue... I wasn't sure whether it should go in here or the OS section.. but there seems more logical than the OS one anyway....
Any help would be appreciated..
:sn:
What is the error?
Memory could not be read? (These are really common and finding a work-around could prove to be like looking for a needle in a haystack :P)

I have the same issue. I like it though because on Xp it wouldnt close the program, and i would always get nasty messages while in steam.

Hahaha, I wish it was that. Essentially its the following
HL2 has stopped responding.
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: hl2.exe
Application Version: 0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 470c11ae
Fault Module Name: filesystem_steam.dll_unloaded

My brother has the same problem on his system (Q6600, 8800GTS, Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I'll keep an eye on this thread and let you know if he does figures it out. If you do figure it out, please post here as well.
I don't think re-installing Steam will fix it, his did it the first time he opened Steam after he built the system. :/
i HAD the same problem I believe it was an engine problem and they fixed that recently "for me anway...whatever it was"
I have this problem still and it has never gone away. All HL2 based games and mods do it to me. They run fine until you exit, then you get an error saying the game crashed.

same issue for me with my rig in my sig.
Only happens in Vista, so I'm going to have to assume that it's something directly related to the engine and how Vista 64bit handles it. So I guess either Valve has to fix it, or microsoft does.

Yeah it usually happens in Vista (both 32 and 64-bit versions) and occasionally in XP. From looking around on the Steam forums it seems to be a very common occurrence for people using Vista. On one hand, it doesn't really do anything since you closed the game anyway, but on the other hand it is annoying. I'm not aware of any fixes for it either, I guess we will have to wait for Valve to fix it.
Happens to my friend in Vista as well.
Then again, I have my own game-crashing on exit issues with other stuff on XP :p

I'm also experiencing this problem on XP64. Doesn't bother me much as long as the game doesn't crash while it's running. Though I'd like to know the cause as well.

Someone on the Steam forums posted that this Windows update seemed to fix the problem for them: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947562
I haven't had a chance to test it but I probably will when I get home later.

You can get round this error by running the program as administer as I just tested it and no issues from that, just click on the desktop icon and pick run as admin and it works great.
Now this isn’t a perfect solution as it would be nice to have it work without errors however I haven’t found any other solution that works at the moment however I will get back and post once I find the answer.

I get this error on and off. I've purged my Prefetch folder, some times just restarting Steam will fix it as well. I've noticed it more after the slew of recent updates as well. The good thing is it does not affect game play at all.
I still have this error.. 3 years later now on Windows 7 64bit. Did anyone ever find a fix?
LOL thats hilarious this still happens, go valve :facepalm:
