View Full Version : Call of duty problem
hello there,
When i play Call of duty online, the game freezes every so often :(
Before it happens bits of the screen go black and other colors then it just freezes then sometimes it will reboot or after 10 seconds i am able to play again.
Sometimes if i see its about to happen i ALT AND TAB and then back into the game and its fine, it does it then its fine for ages, but sometimes it does it for a while.
My cpu is in the mid 30c when playing, GPU is in the 75/80c
The memory is new, its 2 GB of dominator
Theres no overclocking going on!!!
I have no other games to try but it also does it on 3Dmark 06
Any suggestions ??
Thanks
sounds like your graphics cards overheating. I used to have the same problems before I had to reinstall windows and i couldn't patch it. 75/80°C sound waaay too hot for any computer parts! Try running your case with the side panel off for a bit, see if it still happens.
Not really...GPU's are made to take much more heat than a CPU. My 8600m GT loads out in the 90's if I don't have my cooling pad on...I've seen other users higher. You may want to try re-seating your heatsink as well as cleaning dust out etc.

I would suggest putting your system specs in your signature (go to the User CP). Is your video card factory overclocked? It's possible that the manufacturer was a bit too aggressive with the clocks and didn't thoroughly test the card before sending it out. You could try decreasing the core and memory clocks to see if helps.

Its a new heatsink, was just put on the other day, The side of the case is off, It happens even if the computer has just been switched on !!!

Thats the Specs in my Signature, The card came over clocked i think, had it for 2 years now, would it not have shown by now ?
How would i change the core and memory clock ???

Memory sometimes degrades over time. The 7900GTs were notorious for high failure rates due to problems with the memory chips. My brother-in-law's XFX 7900GT failed after ~1 year and he recently had it replaced under warranty. In his case, the card got to the point where there were funny colors and scrambled text on the screen as soon as the system was turned on. This made for an easy diagnosis and RMA through XFX. In your case, you need to rule out a problem with your other hardware (CPU, memory, etc.) before you RMA the video card.
To do this, I suggest first downloading and burning the Ultimate Boot CD. Then boot from this CD and run Memtest86+ for several passes to help determine if your system memory is okay. If it passes, then I would suggest running Orthos (dual Prime95 instances) in Windows for at least 12 hours. If you don't get any errors in either of these tests, then it's very likely that your video card needs to be replaced. Fortunately for you, XFX has a lifetime warranty on its cards. The bad news is that they won't give you another 7900GT--they will probably give you an 8600GTS, which is arguably as good as the 7900GT.
Let us know how the testing goes!

Even though it's new, that very well may be the case! Try taking it off and re-seating it. Sometimes when you mount a heatsink it can be even slightly off...causing bad heat transfer, resulting in bad temps. What thermal paste are you using?

My CPU temps are fine though, there around 16c not underload and 30c underload!!
Using coolermaster paste, This problem was happing even before my new heatsink !!
Oh, thought you were talking about the GPU heatsink...is that stock?

i'm curious. If you replace the original heatsink with a 3rd party heatsink, doesnt that already void your warrant?

i am talking about my CPU heatsink mate!
Don't think thats the problem, Intels basic heatsink was getting my CPU up to 80 c , Had to get another :)
You might have a Memory leak. Coudl be caused by faulty memory, too agressive of timings or not enough voltage.

I really dont think it is a CPU problem, especially since you are not overclocking. I think if it is a CPU problem, you wont even be able to boot up your comp. You did mention the screen will go black (like a blink for a short period of time). It may be your graphic card (higher chance) or memory. I'm sure your CPU is fine. When my computer freezes up on me due to overclocking, I've never see my screen go blank. Same thing goes for the memory. Is your memory a 2 x 1GB kit? If it is, I will take one of the out and just run with 1 gb. Swap them around to see if your computer will still freeze up. Try different slots on your mobo too.
My experience seeing different colors popping up on my monitor is when the vid card goes bad. I really do think you have a bad vid card there.
The screen now even when i am just looking on websites, theres tiny wee colored dots ???
Will that be memory or graphics ??

Will that be memory or graphics ??It's 99% likely that your video card has gone bad. Soon you will see the little dots (snow) and garbled text on the POST screen. Like I said, the 7900s were notorious for failing over time and I had personal experience with an XFX model going bad.

I think we have to clarify somethign here. When you are speaking memory here, its the memony on the vid card, not the memory stick (dominator), right?
It's been so long since I last overclock vid card. I run mine at stock now actually. From what you are saying, it is definitely your vid card that has gone bad. Just send XFX for an RMA. Tell them about the blank screen, and freezing. Also tell them about the dots that are appearing. There are different symptons for GPU and vid card memory gone bad. One shows dots, the other shows artifacts. I really dont recall which is which. But if i remember correctly, it's your vid memory that is going bad.
Please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

you may want to pm the mod to move this tread to the vid card section, since it's not the game's problem, but the vid card problem. You will probably get more advice there.
