View Full Version : I haven't gone!

Nope, I haven't gone. Remember I was trying to install linux on my machine? Errr, that kind of didn't work. From the first hurdle, I was getting horrible error messages left, right and centre, and I decided it wasn't really for me! However, I have (perhaps misguidedly) gone and bought myself a copy of Vista Home Premium, because I found the OEM version for a reasonable price. It works nice. But so far I can't get my SMP client back up and running...

Microsoft.net 2.0 is definately installed, it came with Vista. I downloaded the installer and tried to install it anyway, and it simply came up with "already installed". Just making sure. Anyway, I tried to run install.bat and I got this load of gobbledegook...does anyone here speak that language?

[EDIT: I do have a password on my windows account, and I did enter it correctly. It's not that.]

Looks like a firewall may be blocking those ports.

Unfortunately, disabling my firewall had no effect - I get exactly the same error message.

That's installing folding Win SMP??? install.bat? I've never seen anything like it.

I get that error when my FAH first starts up, because I have it in the startup folder, so it starts instantly. When I close it, and start it after all my programs have loaded, it works fine. The only thing that I can think of that's blocking it on my machine is PeerGuardian, because when the machine first starts, it's always trying to update, but it always works fine once it's loaded. So, if you have PG installed, try disabling it, it might work.

Did you disable UAC before installing and run the installer as Admin?

Just guessing here... I've used a Vista box for all of about 2 hours total. :D

I think the key line is the "access denied", so it has to be a rights issue. I think that port error has nothing to do with the actual problem at hand.

I had that very same problem, turns out I was entering the wrong password. :) I had forgotten I used a different password to log into my machine than everythiing else I do. :)
I know you said you put the password in, just letting you know I thought I had too, almost pulled the rest of my hair out over it too. :)

Can everyone please review the log he posted?

What's the first thing you see? "OpenSCManager failed: Access is denied"

It's rights. He's either not a full-blown administrator, or UAC is somehow blocking it.

The port issue has nothing to do with it, nor does his password, because he's getting errors prior to those errors.

My guess is not full-blown admin. (which is the only way to use Vista :D )

Yep, just had this exact error with UAC enabled. Disabled it and voila! (works)

It was nice of you to post up your error messages you were getting.

Its hard to help you, if we don't know the problem!!

Linux/GNU is so better than windows :p

On XP I just saw that with a fresh install. I had to go in and set my password in user accts. Then return and run install. Now it's folding again.

Heh, I aim to please! Unfortunately Linux did not like my machine, upon the first boot of Ubuntu, I got a slightly alarming long list of errors and a refusal to do anything at all. I quickly decided I lacked the technical knowledge to make Linux work yet!

My problem is now solved - it turns out the UAC was to blame. After turning it off, the install and setup went as normal. After 25 days of non-production (sorry guys!) - I should turn in the first work unit tomorrow. Hopefully I'll add another 500 PPD or so to the team. Insignificant, but still an addition.

Each and every box does count.

I don't think it's insignificant. :)
