View Full Version : XP Freezing up,Any ideas
Hi all,ive been having this problem with Win. XP freezing up on me,I never had this problem with Millenium, and the puter is pretty much the same now as it was then,it seems to run good on my P3 933.
It is real bad when playing Nascar 4,anybody eles having this problem??
Thanks
I had a similiar problem with my parents PC. I installed XP on it and had nothing but problems. I changed IRQ's, moved cards around, tried different drivers for all hardware and still nothing worked. The system was just unstable at best. random reboots, system hangs and BSOD's. I actually think it was due to the modem not having drivers for XP only win 2K. But can't be certain.
I wiped everything out and installed Win 2K pro and the system has not locked up or crashed since then. And that was over a month ago now. Runs perfect!

Remember N4 is known for it's problems! I had problems with N4 with Win 98. I just upgraded to XP Pro, but I lost my N4 CD.:( If I find it, I'll let you know what happens!

I heard sometimes changing the AGP aperture size might help with 3D stability under XP(pro?). Can't hurt to try.
Well I tryed it but no good, but thanks for the input.I think im going to either write 0s to the drive and start all over,or take out the Win XP,it never had a problem til that came along, looks like its going to be a LONG day:mad:
How high is your FSB and vcore? I had to lower mine to default/1400 to play N4! (Win98)
I had it set up CPU was @ 1551MHZ,don't remember the FSB,but I defaulted it also, made it better, but still freezes up,not just N4,but doing anything it will freeze or restart on its own..
Did you do an upgrade over ME or a clean install of XP? Iff you did the upgrade then you should backup all your data files, reformat and do a clean install. Then make sure you do all the updates. The majority of your problems should go away if you do a clean install and then make sure you only install compatible apps.
Yes it was an upgrade over ME,but I got a new HD,so everything was fresh, new install with ME and then XP..
You still have an OS installed over another OS, it would still be alot better if you reformatted and just did a clean install of XP.
Ok,I have one probably a stupid question, were do I back up my file to,A CD or???
there are a lot of ways to back up files. if you have a cd burner use that. then you have a hard copy of your files. I also use my 250 meg zip drive and I have a second hard drive that I keep all of my files on. this makes reformating/reinstalling a bit nicer.

before you do anything check your IRQ's some people have reported that XP has put all there hardware under one IRQ thus trying to share everything and causing lock-ups may not be the case but you might want to look and check it out.
Well I haven't checked the IRQ yet,but I did write 0s to the hard drive and reinstalled Millenium and it froze also,so I installed the XP again cause I know XP isn't causing it,I will check the IRQ next..
