I just picked up a Seagate 320GB 7200.10 from bestbuy for $65...

How good are these drives? I see on the sticker it mentions that w/o the jumper in, the drive performs at 3G/bs as compared to 1.5G/bs with it in. Whats the deal with that? Why would they make it run slower at stock?

I'm just using it for storage/backup in my Celeron-L rig.

Some older boards with only 1.5 SATA controllers didn't play nice with it set at 3.0, so default is what works for both. Removing the jumper will not make the drive faster, but will at least remove the 1.5 thoeretical limitation.

4 out of 5 stars with over 2000 reviews.NewEgg reviews should be taken with around 10lbs of salt. Most users have no idea how the product works making the "reviews" a joke.

:welcome: to the forums!! :D

I'm using one of those I bought at Office Max without an issue. About the same speed of my 250gig 620AS drive so while it's not great for an OS drive it's not at all bad for storage. The 16MB of cache and quiet operation is nice, and perpendicular recording gives better speeds through higher drive density. If you're really wondering how happy people have been with their 7200.10 drives, ask anyone who owns a 250gig 410AS how they like it.

IMO It'd be fine for your celeron system.

I'm not anal about speeds of the HDD. I was just curious :)

I think I got a good deal on it. Not a great deal, but a deal none-the-less. I needed another HDD to back up my stuff. I really wanted another 400GB so I could RAID1, but then I figured I don't need to backup everything on there, only about 50GB of stuff the rest isn't important. Just need my pictures, downloads and music backed up.

After my dad's HDD died and he lost a ton of sentimental pictures, I have been on my toes keeping everything of mine on one HDD. Now I can be at ease.

7200.10's are good, and I believe they were the drive of choice for a few months. Nice buy :P
