Despite my hectic schedule, I find I need down-time at the end of the day. This means watching American tele, or reading a book. I haven't played games since I was a kid, but I'd like to give it another go.

I'm looking for:

RPG or similar
I love the Final Fantasy series, so maybe something similar
Single player [I believe my Univ. network bans games]
Must be able to run on a Macbook (remember: Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor...!!)

It doesn't have to be recent.

Some of the rpg's I've played and loved them.

I would recommend WarCraft III Reign of Chaos (http://www.blizzard.com/us/war3/). Should install and run fine on your mac, or at least it does on my wifes G4. It is a RTS style of game and I keep going back to it every now and then. WCIII has a great single player game as well as solid online play from what I hear. Also regarding your University's networking policies, they most likely have a campus firewall, but I know our university allows a wide range of UDP ports witch do not interfere with online game playing. Your campus might have a security or firewall web page that shows what ports are blocked and which ones aren't.

WarCraft maybe will run on the Intel GMA X3100 GPU but you have to look at some old games to get it to work on that style GPU.

If a new computer is not an option a console system might be ideal. Buying an old Game Cube, PS2, or Xbox shouldn't be hard to find at a cheap price.

Blizzard games run great on older hardware... You said single player only? Why and how exactly is your university blocking games (that's strange and I've never heard of it, only blocking p2p)?

No consoles, please. I've played Fable (decent, but not amazing). Oblivion I don't believe has a Mac Port.

I played Starcraft and Warcraft in my youth, but can't say I was crazy about it.

There's always diablo 2? lol

Not the greatest story, I have to say. I played D2 and LOD a long, long time ago. Doubt I have the energy to start anew and it is quite addictive...

Well, to be honest, I haven't actually checked it myself. I know it's on the ban (http://www.balliol.ox.ac.uk/comp/rules/index.asp) list, though. It's also the fact I don't want to trouble myself with online gaming. I've done it before (in the dark ages, with a modem!), and I know that your gaming will sometimes be restricted by the hours of the community. I just want something simple I can plop in for an hour or so every day and enjoy at my leisure.

I am not quite the mac expert, but those works under Whinedoze and pretty much any *nix distro via Wine.

-System Shock 2 ? While technically played from a first-person standpoint, the rpg elements and the story makes up for it.
-Final fantasy 7 and 8 have PC versions, which can probably work on a macbook.
-Fallout 1 and 2
-Diablo (I or II) -> those have direct mac ports.
-Last but not least, Falcon's eye!

+1 for diablo 2, great game, wasted a good amount of life on that game.
I'm not sure if Fallout series was ever ported to mac, but if it was, great game.
EDIT:
it looks like they did port it to the mac, this game is amazing!

I was even more life on fallout 2.

oops didn't see the post above me.

Maybe you'd enjoy a 4x game? You'd could play it for an hour or so a night over a week and still have continuity. Sins of a Solar Empire comes to mind.

Is Neverwinter Nights 1 ported to the mac? Its d&d based but is a pretty good RPG that might fit your bill, its older so it shouldn't push the onboard graphics too hard.

Does it have to run on OSX? You don't have XP on that machine?

Have you thought about purchasing a DS or PSP? PSP can emulate all PSX RPG games and they both have an ok library.

It looks to be like they only ban running servers of games, Ie you can't run a dedicated Counterstrike server out of your dorm room. Your network policy is fairly strict, but it isnt THAT strict, to not allow you to play online games, at least thats what I saw. You might try calling your IT department and asking them.

That being said
Fallout
Fallout 2
Knights of the Old republic
Baldur's Gate 2
Baldur's Gate

All those are great RPGs for the mac.

I didnt like it all that much but Neverwinter nights was ported to the mac as well

I agree, I didn't see where it would ban online game play, but just the hosting of game servers which makes sense.

Have you thought about purchasing a DS or PSP? .

I second the mage here. I know you said "no consoles please" but a DS or PSP can be a quite a fun toy for a busy man. The DS has some great RPGs that can keep you busy for an hour here, and an hour there. Plus, some of the stylus games are fun. World Championship Poker is a fun one, and you only need one game card to play multiplayer with up to six people, so if you know/meet others with a DS it can be a lot of fun...if you like poker.

As for OS X games I've only played Starcraft and WoW. Both play well on my iBook so they should fly on your MacBook, but WoW could easily consume your life if you don't exercise self control. :-/

+1 for KOTOR

Not sure if there was a mac port, but it is a great game to play for a couple hours at a time. I personally loved the story, but I've always been a big SW fan.

to be quite honest I just went down the list amazon.coms list of RPGs for mac and picked out ones I thought were good.

It wasnt that hard as the cumulative list was only 5 pages long >.>

i think you should run to a local thrift shop or pawn shop and get your self a NES or SNES and some games, would be cheaper and probally more fun/games available
