View Full Version : Koolance + Peltier idea!
I've got a Koolance Mk2 case, and it works really well, however I want it to work even better........
My idea is to get one of those heatsinks which attach to an 80mm fan, attach a peltier to it and then attach a waterblock to it, then finally cover the whole waterblock and peltier in silcone sealant to prevent condensation.
I want to put the unit between the Video Card cooler and the CPU cooler to reduce the impact of heat from the vid card.
p.s. The fan will suck instead of blow, I want to have the heat exit the case so I don't increase the ambient temp. I plan to put my 'unit' in the space where the extra 80mm fan goes in the case. Luckily there's enough room for my unit due to not having a massive heatsink on my CPU
Has anybody else tried this kind of thing yet?
If so what were the results like?

Sounds like a good Idea and if you have the extra cash to spend also dont mind the extra noise then go for it.

You're thinking along the same lines that I am. I just posted about that two minutes ago, d'oh!
My theory is to suck as much heat out of the box as possible with the wc and not have to kill myself to sink out the remaining hot spots such as DDR and vid mem. Use some simple ducting to the ram slots and vid card for that, but will the rest of the mobo still need some more forced air or not?
How loud are smaller pelt setups?
This seems like it could be worth pursuing, maybe hacked into a larger tower like the soon to be released Koolance.

there is still a need to put a fan blowing on the video card
because the ram sinks need to cooled, or you could water cool them too
and i need air cooling for my Ram
RDRAM runs very hot

First you will have to find out where the air from the rad is being dumped inside or outside the case. I've never seen one up close or used one before so I don't know.
If it's being dumped inside that will raise the case temp and the other temps will go up too.

It makes no sound at all, but once again if the air from the rad in dumped inside the case the case temp will be higher then without the pelt.

The radiator at the top of the Koolance case is isolated with a tray underneath it. It has two fans blowing in and one blowing out for the rad area.
I have a cute little 50mm fan I was planning on using to cool the GF3 ram. I need to haquertize some sort of duct setup to direct its flow fully across the ram.
I noticed that when I tried to oc the Ti 500 to 265/580 the machine locked up in 3dmark 2k1 in the dragolith high. I felt the hsf and ram sinks on the GF3 and they realy only felt warm, not hot. What's the deal with that, lapping time?

same thing happened with me on my GeForce 3
then i put a fan on it and it works great
thats how i knew to recommend what i did in the post above about needing a fan if using a watercooler

The apparently low temps on the Xtasy Ti 500 GPU and mem makes me skeptical of the sink mounting.
After the new box is built, proofed and benched at stock speeds I will be replacing the sinks and fan. After another benching run I'll add the additional 50mm fan for active mem cooling and after another round of testing add some fairing to control the airflow.
If I decide that the Koolance, at whatever state of modification it is in at the time, is capable of absorbing the extra heat then I'll waterblock the GPU.
I'll be documenting it all with screenshots and photos on a new oc project website I'll set up as soon as I have the content for it.
One way or another I will find out what works and what doesn't or isn't worth it and this new box will fly or I'll scrap it and start over
